An extremely rare Edward VIII halfcrown that was never issued and is one of only six known to exist and the only one ever to be sold at auction will be offered at Noonans in an auction of Coins and Historical Medals on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. It is being sold by a private collector and expected to fetch £200,000-300,000.

As Bradley Hopper, Head of the Coin Department at Noonans explained: “Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 before any coins in his name were released into circulation in Britain. Patterns of each denomination had been prepared (all dated 1937) but at the time of the abdication they had not yet received royal approval. After the abdication the few coins which had been struck were locked away, and work began on the coinage of the new king, George VI. It is not known how the coins in private hands came to be in the public domain so opportunities to acquire any of these coins are very rare and we expect this coin to be keenly contested.”

He continues: “The striking for Edward VIII's coinage was scheduled to begin on 1 January 1937, and Royal Mint reports from 1935-1936 suggest that over 200 dies for coins, medals, and seals had already been produced in preparation. Many of these were eventually destroyed by the Mint. Before this a small number of Patterns had been struck, six sets in total each comprising Five Pounds to Farthing. Of these, five are complete with three belonging to the Royal Mint Collection (one of which is on permanent loan to the British Museum), another is to be found in the Royal Collection, while the final complete set is to be found in within the famed Tyrant Collection. It seems most improbable that any of these will come to market in foreseeable future. The current specimen forms part of the final, sixth set and is one of only two that are believed to be in private hands – this was originally sold at auction in the USA in 1978 and has remained in the same collection for the past 40 years. Several of its siblings have appeared at auction in recent years. The Five Pounds sold for $1,900,000 in 2021, while the Crown made $300,000 back in January 2020. The Shilling was offer in November 2025 and made 160,000 CHF (equivalent to about £150,000).”

He finishes: “The present coin is not only a great rarity, but also of numismatic note. The effigy with the king makes a conspicuous break with almost 300 years of tradition. From the time of Charles II monarchs arranged their portraits so that they faced in the opposite direction to their immediate predecessor. Edward’s father, George V, had a left facing effigy, and so Edward’s should have faced to the right on his coinage. However, when the king sat for the engraver Humphrey Paget on the 28th April 1936, he presented the left side of his head, so that his fashionable side parting might be depicted. A remarkable choice, which serves as a tangible reminder of Edward’s extraordinary reign, perhaps the most infamous of any British Monarch. The reverse is equally remarkable, presenting a square royal standard; a device not seen on any other British coin.”

The rare and outstanding Great War airship coxswain’s ‘August 1914’ D.S.M. group of four awarded to Warrant Officer Class 2 H. G. Cook of the Royal Naval Air Service, will be offered in Noonans sale of Orders, Medals, Decorations and Militaria on Wednesday (May 20, 2026). They are estimated to fetch £8,000-10,000 [lot 29]

Ni**od Dix, Deputy Chairman of Noonans and Director of the Medal Department explained: “Herbert George Cook began his career in the Navy but moved to the R.N. Air Service as a coxswain on an airship during the Great War. He and a colleague showed great bravery while escorting the original British Expeditionary Force across the Channel, on 13 August 1914, when they volunteered to climb outboard to change a faulty propellor at 2,000 feet. These medals are part of the estate of a deceased collector and are probably the earliest dated awards of the Distinguished Service Medal ever made.”

A Charge of the Light Brigade pair awarded to Private G. Badger of the 13th Light Dragoons, who was wounded in the Charge at Balaklava on 25 October 1854 and left a vivid description of the Charge will be offered in Noonans sale of Orders, Medals, Decorations and Militaria on Wednesday (May 20, 2026). They are estimated to fetch £6,000-8,000 [lot 73]

Oliver Pepys, Auctioneer and Medal Specialist (Associate Director) Noonans: “Medals from the famous Charge of the Light Brigade always attract a lot of attention. Private George Badger enlisted in Birmingham with the 13th Light Dragoons at the age of 18. Ten months later, he was wounded by a Russian gunner, who stabbed a steel into his side during the Charge at Balaklava on 25 October 1854. At the time of his death in Wolverhampton in 1904, at the age of 69 years; a newspaper report mentioned that “In an early engagement he was wounded in the foot and was in hospital for a short time.” However, Badger returned to his regiment on 3 October, in time to take part in the charge three weeks later.”

He ends: “It is being sold by a private collector.”
