We cast from CAD models, waxes, carved waxes, masters and moulds. We also make moulds to produce single or multiple castings from masters. Welcome back to Metal Mondays, our weekly series where we take a closer look at the precious metals we love working with and what makes each one special.

This week, we're taking a closer look at 18ct Yellow Gold.
Made from 75% pure gold, 18ct yellow gold is prized for its rich, warm colour and luxurious appearance. It offers the perfect balance between beauty and durability, making it an excellent choice for fine jewellery that's designed to be worn and treasured for years.

The casting grain we work with is made from 100% recycled gold, giving new life to existing precious metal without compromising on quality. It provides a reliable, consistent cast and flows beautifully into intricate designs, making it ideal for bringing detailed pieces to life.

The answer is cobalt 🧲

The platinum alloy we use contains cobalt, which is a magnetic metal. While pure platinum isn't attracted to a magnet, the addition of cobalt gives the alloy the magnetic properties you're seeing in this video.

It's a small detail, but one that often surprises people.

Before anyone worries about their jewellery sticking to the fridge, the effect is actually very subtle! We are using a very strong magnet here to highlight the slight magnetic properties of this cobalt containing alloy.

For Metal Monday this week we are shining a spotlight on platinum, one of the most prestigious metals used in jewellery casting.

The platinum alloy we use contains a small amount of cobalt, which makes it especially well suited to lost wax casting. The cobalt improves the flow of the molten metal, allowing it to fill intricate details more accurately and produce clean, consistent castings. It also creates a finer grain structure and a harder finished alloy, making it ideal for jewellery that is designed to be worn and enjoyed for years to come.

Platinum is naturally greyish white, highly durable, resistant to tarnishing and incredibly dense, giving finished pieces a luxurious weight and feel. These qualities, combined with excellent casting performance, are why it remains one of our favourite metals to work with.

Why does the crucible turn blue after casting platinum?

When platinum-cobalt alloy is heated to the extremely high temperatures needed for casting, some of the cobalt in the alloy reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere. This creates a thin layer of cobalt oxide, which can deposit onto the surface of the ceramic crucible- creating a striking blue colour.

The blue coating gradually builds up with repeated use, so we regularly replace our crucibles to ensure every platinum casting meets our high quality standards.

After last Monday's Bank Holiday, Metal Mondays are back!

This week we are talking about bronze. Our premium casting bronze comes from Legor, an Italian manufacturer renowned for producing high-quality jewellery casting alloys.

This particular bronze is a copper-tin bronze (90% copper, 10% tin) with a distinctive warm pink-red tone. It's one of our go to alloys for lost wax casting thanks to its excellent fluidity, allowing it to fill intricate details with ease to produce clean, consistent castings.

It's a reliable bronze alloy that combines beautiful colour with strong performance, producing pieces with great finishing potential.

We will be closed next Monday, the 25th May, due to the Bank Holiday.

Back open on Tuesday the 26th May as normal. Any work dropped off after 1pm yesterday will not be ready until Tuesday 26th after 1pm.

Any work dropped off from today until the end of the week will not be ready until Thursday 28th.

The next platinum cast will be next Wednesday with all other metals.

It’s that time again!

This week we’re taking a closer look at brass, a versatile alloy widely used in casting for its strength, warm colour and excellent casting performance.

The brass we use is a high-quality casting grain developed specifically for lost wax casting. Its formulation gives it consistent fluidity when molten, it also offers a higher hardness than traditional brass alloys, helping produce durable pieces.

One of the reasons we like working with this brass is its low processing temperature and clean casting behaviour. The alloy contains a high level of deoxidisers, helping reduce oxidation during casting and resulting in cleaner trees and brighter finished pieces.

Brass has long been valued in casting for its balance of strength and workability, and it continues to be one of the most versatile metals we work with.
