Inside every automatic watch is a tiny mechanical world, comprised of many intricate parts working together.
But these only runs as smoothly as they does because of one thing you can’t see: oil.

Every moving part depends on it, and over time that oil degrades, which is why a watch needs regular servicing. In this video, one of our certified watchmakers Raj explains some of the complexities of the oiling process. There are different lubricants and quantities, which require a level of precision and expertise only a trained and certified watchmaker can deliver.

So, the next time you would like to service or repair your watch, it's best to pick a workshop that is qualified to care for your watch at the highest level.

After a mechanical watch has been serviced, it’s important to make sure the movement is running as it should. A Cyclomotion winder helps us with this process by simulating the natural movement of a watch being worn on the wrist, allowing us to observe how the automatic winding system performs over time.

It’s one of the specialist tools we use in the workshop to help ensure each timepiece is thoroughly tested before it leaves our care. Precision watchmaking isn’t just about the service itself, it’s about making sure everything is working exactly as it should.

As attached as we may be to our favourite watch, it's not bad idea to leave it at home for certain activities. Although watches with a metal bracelet, like this beautiful vintage Omega Seamaster, or a ones with a rubber strap tend to be more robust to withstand the elements, does not mean they are immune to wear and tear.
Sweat in particular can be corrosive to the elements, and certainly increase the rate at which dirt will build up in between the small links of your bracelet.
So, depending on your workout routine and frequency it's worth thinking about leaving your beloved timepiece at home!

This week in the workshop... a beautiful Baume & Mercier dress watch with cracked crystal has come in. A cracked watch crystal is more than a cosmetic issue. Even a small crack can compromise the protection around the dial and hands, leaving the movement vulnerable to dust, moisture and further damage. What may start as a minor crack can quickly become a much bigger problem if left untreated.

Our watchmakers can assess the condition of the crystal and surrounding components, replacing it where necessary and checking that the watch remains properly protected. If your timepiece has suffered a knock or the crystal is showing signs of damage, it’s best to have it inspected sooner rather than later.

Crooked dial on this Baume & Mercier. The cause is broken dial feet, the tiny pins that hold the dial in place. Once they snap, it can’t be glued back or nudged into position. The whole dial needs replacing.

A mechanical watch is more complicated than most people expect, and this is a good example of why it’s worth leaving to people who do it every day. This workshop is full of experts who are certified to service all the major Swiss brands.
