I love teaching people fresh techniques!
Karen is a student at my Wednesday morning class Jenny Greenhow Jewellery studio near Dorchester.
For a while now she has been working hard perfecting her bezel making skills, setting her handmade dicroic glass cabochons in sterling silver. This involves precision and accuracy in measuring, filing, soldering and a close eye to detail at all times.
What a joy then, to introduce her to a totally different kettle of fish, fusing together her scrap silver into a fabulous organic textured bangle using simply torch and pick. Controlling the heat and controlling the melting point, its a cathartic and economical way and a total change of vibe!

Great morning with my small business buddies learning how to make good use of FB. 🥰😇😊

Facebook for Business Workshop the idea today was to learn about some of the tools available so that, instead of creating tons and tons of content, which is exhausting 🤯, we make what we have work a bit harder 🤣

Last weekend I spent 2 days learning the first steps in hand push engraving. Thanks to Master engraver John cook or his enjoyable engaging teaching at Kate's SeaandSilver JewellerySchool fabulous seaside studio.
I was inspired to pursue this following the Heritage Crafts event at Kingston Maurwood, which was a very thought provoking day with a seminar at the end all about endangered crafts and dying skills.
Did you know that hand push engraving is on the Heritage Craft's red list? It's officially classed as an endangered craft. Makes it all the more of a challenge I reckon!

It was so good to meet other the jewellers too! I hope we can follow each other's engraving journey.

Hand engraving is definitely not for the faint hearted. If you want to master the albeit pretty simple basic techniques, there's hours of practise ahead of you. Gulp..
There's sizing, shaping and sharpening the graver, then keeping it sharp, preparing the metal, transferring your image, then cutting the actual metal.
It felt like one moment you 'had it' and the next, slipped across the whole plate leaving a nasty huge scratch 😬. There was lots of muttered swearing around the bench!
I'm excited to see what off shoots I can explore with these techniques and where it will take me.
I hope to share my progress here and soon (?) do some work to make that first plate look like a 'before' shot!

Stone set ring workshop today!
It's quite a demanding one, there's a lot of silver working to get through.
This is a full day, starting with pouring (?) over my carefully selected gemstones, choosing what takes your fancy today...
Firstly making your ring, and there are a few choices of dimension and thickness for this, and then cutting, filing, soldering that and rounding it up. Make your bezel to fit your stone, solder that closed and onto a backplate, pierce that (saw around it? and more filing and sanding.
All this hard work amongst tea, coffee and biscuits and a lunchbreak on the lawn amongst the whirling swallows x
Finally setting the stone, quite a challenge but everyone was victorious and I remembered to take a selfie! 😆

I was delighted to make this seaglass necklace for Helen, as a surprise leaving gift from her work friends. What a thoughtful gift!

Handmade silver bespoke jewellery which is made just for the individual.

As a bespoke commission, the choices for a necklace are vast but we knew that she..

So I crafted a 3 piece bezel set necklace with a centre seafoam seaglass pebble and accompanied by 2 smaller white pebbles.
I've cut and filed that wave into the backplate of the centre piece so you can enjoy the colour of it as the sun shines through..
There are also wave lines on the back of the smaller ones, these are roller printed with a feather.. yes a feather! Fantastic isn't it x

And she loves it, which is all I needed to hear!
