The weather may be miserable today but there were 11 people making ‘Rings & Things’ in the workshop. Lots of sets of stacking rings were made, one Russian wedding ring and one infinity necklace. I may be a little biased but It’s the perfect way to spend a wet and windy Saturday. This workshop is full until January but there’s only 2 places remaining so I will add another date to the timetable for early March.

We’re at the half way point of the Autumn term of the 8 week course and as usual I keep forgetting to get pictures of what everyone is working on! But I did manage to get some pictures of the lovely copper pieces that regular student Emma has been working on. Emma first joined us for an October intensive course a few years ago and has been attending courses on and off since. She has continued to work with copper as she prefers it over silver. The lovely warm copper tones really enhance the deep blue kyanite gemstones in the earrings and just look at that saw piercing! As well as being a lovely metal to work with copper is antimicrobial and kills 99.9% of bacteria.

If you’re thinking of learning a new skill and fancy a bit of jewellery making then the next term starts in January and booking is open. Beginners start with copper to practice all the key skills and then utilise the skills in a silver bezel setting project. Intermediate students start with an optional tube setting project and this can also be practiced in copper if you don’t want to risk your expensive silver or if want to practice a few different construction methods before committing to a design in Silver.

In addition to the weekly classes there’s also an intensive Jewellery School taking place in April which is basically a condensed version of the weekly classes but the intensive format really aids the learning process.

I managed to squeeze in making another one of these wave rings before last nights class. I started with an off cut length of 2 mm square wire and thinned it out a bit first in the rolling mill to make it a better size for a ring, plus it goes much further. I added a little bit of texture to the outer 2 bands as well. I can’t decide which one I prefer to be honest but if you want to make one yourself there’s limited space on the workshop in March. Please note it is not suitable for a beginner.

I’m planning on adding a new 1 day workshop to the calendar for early next year aimed at students who want to expand on their skills so previous experience will be needed for this one. This ring is made up of 3 individual rings with a wave design that are then soldered together with the waves offset (that’s the tricker part). The result is a lovely wide wavy ring. I will update the mailing list first once I’ve scheduled the class (could be later today or tomorrow) so sign up on the home page of the website if haven’t already.

I finally transferred mums fingerprint to a texture tile after a fair bit of editing to enhance the detail. The enlarged version worked the best so I’ve now made a copper clay piece from it. I plan to make myself something with silver clay but not decided on the final design just yet. If you’d like to make your own it can be done on the silver keepsake workshop in February

I was so impressed by the results from this workshop when it took place recently so I’ve scheduled another one for February 14th next year (Second slide is a little snap shot of some of the results)

When our very grumpy but handsome cat tiger passed away earlier this year it inspired a new workshop. The process of creating a texture tile from an image or print has been part of silver clay summer school for a number of years but I’ve never taught it as part of a one day class, until now.

You will need to have a copy of your paw print, baby’s hand or footprint or the finger print of a loved one prior to the session as I will need it emailed to me so I can prep it ready for the class. A kit to do this is easy to buy online if you don’t already have a print and no ink or other material comes into contact with your pet or person. Then during the class you will firstly create a texture tile from the print. This is yours to keep so you can continue to create as many jewellery items as you like. Then you will make either a pendant or small pair of earrings featuring the print. The print can be on the front on your piece of jewellery or it can be on the reverse with a pattern or design featured on the front, time permitting a small fireable gemstone can be added too.

The price of this session is £125 which includes 7 g of silver clay and materials to make your texture plate/tile.

Today’s fabulous spinner rings! It’s always great to see all the different design combinations and there were lots of different designs made today and all fantastic! You can really personalise these rings with the many design punches and there’s lots of choice when it comes to the slim band that spins. The possibilities are endless and if you want to make one for yourself the next date is January.
