When we cast sterling silver it turns black due to the copper content in it. Raw casts are placed in acidic solution over heat to remove the stubborn copper oxide layer before mechanical polishing. As the acid strips the layer off the copper goes into solution turning it a blue/green colour.

Bit of silver refining this afternoon turning scrap sterling into fine silver. Here's a very cool science experiment showing a small part of the operation. Metallic copper is placed in a silver nitrate solution, where it loses electrons (oxidation) and forms copper ions, while the silver ions gain electrons (reduction) and precipitate as solid, often fluffy crystals.

Yeah Science!!!
