The Expert Eye: Why Old-Cut Diamonds Feel Different 💎

Old-cut diamonds and modern round brilliants have a distinctly different character. Old mine and old European cuts were fashioned by hand, often with broader facets, a higher crown which results in wonderful, broader dispersion of light, with dramatic ‘fire’.

By contrast, modern round brilliants are cut with precision to create maximum sparkle and, by definition, brilliance.

A useful way to identify an old cut is to look for a smaller table and an open culet, visible at the base of the stone.

At Clare Blatherwick Jewellery, we work with antique diamonds and understand how their age, cut and character can influence setting choice, everyday wear and ongoing care.

Here are 3 things you may never discover at a High Street jeweller…

1. Sometimes, the best decision may be not to remodel.
Sometimes you shouldn’t break up a lovely old piece of jewellery. We see time and again that jewellers are willing to do this without checking if the piece is rare, collectable and possibly worth more than the sum of its parts.

2. How to create something truly personal.
We guide clients through designing a bespoke piece that reflects their story and style, rather than choosing from a display cabinet. That includes reusing inherited jewellery, remodelling sentimental pieces, and selecting the right gems and metals for the client and how they will wear their jewel.

3. How your piece of jewellery will be made.
From the design process through the physical construction. you'll see hand drawn designs, Computer Aided Designs, and even videos of your piece being made. Oh, and we can provide you with a Registered Valuer’s insurance document to ensure you can protect your new jewel properly.

Jewellery decisions should be led by knowledge, not simply by what can be sold or remade. That is the difference expert, independent advice can make.
