🚬📸 EXCERPT FROM BRAT BUT IT’S LITERALLY NOT BECAUSE IT’S JUST A BRATTY MOVIE COLLECTION

“In an interview with , states that the ‘360’ music video was ‘very much inspired by the energy of Daisies. Just this idea of the world being s**t, so just be a brat. Obviously in Daisies, it’s coming from a much more political angle, but there’s a punk ethos that still runs through the video.’ There are many visual and aesthetic correlations between Chytilová’s film and the video for Brat’s opening track. Striking painted-on eyeliner, short skirts and body confidence, being a beacon of bold technicolour in a world of desolate greys just scratches the surface. Yet, despite Charli’s dismissal, there is a political angle linking the two as well: Charli and the Maries are so intentionally anti-feminist that their actions eventually evolve into a type of neo-feminism. The Maries, along with Charli’s alternative girl gang, become symbols of defiance because of their poor manners, impulsive exploits, loud mouths and gluttonous mentalities. They roll their eyes, use men for their pleasure and do whatever the hell they want to do. In a society that values modest ladylike behaviour, these are party girls looking only for fun and a good time, embracing a type of slapstick absurdism that is both sexy and radical.” —

🚬📸 EXCERPT FROM BRAT BUU IT’S LITERALLY NOT BECAUSE IT’S JUST A BRATTY FILM COLLECTION

“The parallels between the music video for ‘Von dutch’ and Kon’s film are striking, to say the least. Eclectic, dreamlike and violent, Perfect Blue and ‘Von dutch’ show the descent of a pop idol once heralded as a marketable choice for pre-teens into a darkly mature yet tortured soul. The song’s lyrics are deceptively simple, capturing a cocky bravado espoused by many stars towards the climax of their 15 minutes of fame. It is this descent that is captured in the song’s video. Opening on Charli, who is preening before both the paparazzi and the viewer in an airport, her poses and movements grow more aggressive, savage and self-destructive. By the time the song is done, she is little more than luggage — a literal object — barely glanced at by the public that once adored her. Likewise, Perfect Blue captures Mima’s downward spiral as her sense of self implodes, resulting in a dazzling and knotty narrative that is followed by a few unpleasant demises. Yes, she is our number one. But when she’s not, what will she be?” —

🥞 Is there a more iconic cinematic pancake scene than Matilda?

In our film criticism book, Eating the Screen, explores how the kitchen becomes a place of character development in films, highlighting Matilda’s fluffy stack as part of her argument:

“This kitchen scene marks the beginning of Matilda’s independence and individuality. When her mother tells her that there is soup to heat up in the microwave, Matilda chooses to make pancakes instead; a dish that requires thorough preparation. In that small kitchen, Matilda learns how to take care of herself and make her own choices. While most adults find the kitchen to be a place of danger and stress, Matilda has it the other way round — the kitchen becomes a safe space for her, where she can be herself and do the things she likes. This teaches Matilda that if you want something done, you have to do it yourself. Someone might not always be there to help you, even if they are your parents.“

Read Jessica’s entire article on the cinematic kitchen in our book, Eating the Screen, which is available only in our anthology volume set, Film East: A Collection of Film Essays (vol 1). The book can be purchased in paperback or e-book.
