Tonearms come to me in all sorts of states, this one has got to be one of the worst. A Rega RB300 that has had its broken plastic housing glued back together. The glue wasn’t applied sympathetically! This part will be replaced, the internal and external wires will be upgraded and everything else will be given a good going over.

Next stage. The weights have been bonded to the underside of the platter. What colour mat should I opt for, black or burgundy? First switch on, speed seems nice and stable. Next thing to do is fit a cartridge and listen to it for the first time.

Next stage. The Rega RB250 is finished. It has been rewired with 33awg silver coated, copper wire. The cartridge tags are gold plated and the cable joints are reinforced with heat shrink. The external wire is professional grade audio cable and there is a separate earth lead made from ultra flexible silicone wire. The brass b**g that I turned on Friday has been milled to accommodate the 3 wires. The counterweight weights have been inserted. I mounted it onto the Osseus turntable, I think I’ll replace the simple plastic ring at the base of the arm with an aluminium, machined alternative.

Next stage. The Rega RB250 tonearm has been polished and reassembled. The bearings have been cleaned, lubricated and cleaned again. The internal wire is in place, the counterweight shaft has been fitted (I use a single drop of copper grease to ensure that the stainless steel shaft doesn’t ever seize in the aluminum arm, making removal easy). The counterweight has been machined, you’ll notice that the shaft hole is not circular, this ensures a 3 point contact making it more rigid than a round hole would. Little details! The b**g for the arm pillar has been turned and will be milled to accommodate the cables on Monday. Compare the pictures I posted yesterday with those taken today, quite a transformation.

Another stage, the aluminium platter has been machined. Particular attention is paid to the fit on the central boss of the sub platter. It’s important that it’s a very close fit. The 21 underslung weights will be bonded to the underside tomorrow. There are small pockets machined in the underside to accommodate them.

After a short break I’m back to work today. Progress on the walnut veneered Osseus continues. The motor and power supply have been mounted. I use a simple jig to ensure that the motor is mounted in the correct position. The sub platter has been fitted and the turntable has been switched on for the first time.
