Spotted: Lionel Messi in a Patek Philippe Nautilus.
In a farewell dressing-room photo with Ángel Di María this week, marking his last game for Argentina, Lionel Messi wore a white-gold Patek Philippe Nautilus, reference 5810G-001. Its deep blue dial uses baguette diamonds for the hour markers, with two side by side at twelve o'clock.
There's a nice bit of timing to it. The Nautilus was designed by Gérald Genta and launched in 1976, and this watch is one of the models Patek Philippe released this spring to mark its 50th anniversary. The porthole-shaped case, with its distinctive "ears" on either side, was inspired by the hatch of a ship.
A case shape like that, along with its water resistance, depends on gaskets and seals that quietly age over the years. Whatever you wear, from a Nautilus to a much-loved everyday watch, a seal check and a proper service keep it running well. Bring it to our workshop at the Victoria Centre in Nottingham or Cornhill Market in Lincoln, or send it to us with our fully insured nationwide postal service.
