So it’s Day 4 of .amaker and today it’s all about Before and After making. Here are some of my plant cell rings showing the decision design process on paper disks to work out which arrangement of gems belong together in each cell for a pop of colour - a diamond nucleus or a green emerald chloroplast! I always photograph this part of the design process so I can revisit previous decision making!

So it’s Day 3 of .amaker week and today’s prompt is Day in the Life. So I have taken a few videos and photos of today.
1. My day today started at 6am with a brisk walk in Clumber Park where I live which was just beautiful this morning.
2. After the school run this is my drive to work to my workshop . Everyday I drive down the longest limetree avenue in Europe to work.
3. I open up the studio to start making
4. First job is to make some settings for new rings ready for
5. Here is how I start to make the settings using round wire then my rollers to make it flatter.
6. Then annealing the gold wire using my torch
7. Finally shaping the wire for a pink tourmaline setting
8. Then the rest of the day was spent making silver mimosas- my signature plant to turn into pendants and earrings. Rach leaf is hand cut with a piercing saw to make each stem!

So it’s Day 2 of .amaker week and today’s prompt is inspiration. My jewellery has always been inspired by nature and natural gemstones. My jewellery is informed by a love of botany, gardening and horticultural tools. A personal
relationship with nature is central to my life and work. I love drawing especially plants and stylising them to capture the essence of their form. Often I take plants apart and see how nature has made them to inform my process. I also love antique botanical illustrations. My latest collection is inspired by floriography; the language of flowers which I use to create a hidden narrative within each piece. The jewellery I create cast wonderful shadows. I am inspired by the notion that my jewellery can function equally on or off the body, as wearable plants or pieces of sculpture.

This week is Find a Maker week when we celebrate our creative craft community .amaker

Today it’s all about introductions and your story.
So here’s me in the studio making. I have been making botanically inspired jewellery since 1996 and this year it will be 30 years since i started my creative journey as a jeweller!

So where did it all start?
I did a BA Hons degree in Wood, Metal, Ceramics & Glass at Manchester Metropolitan University in 1996. I specialised in glass and metal. Part of my course I did in Norway which was an amazing transformative experience. After uni I set up my workshop in the Northern Quarter in Manchester. I love Manchester and many a night was had at the hacienda.
I then headed to the south east coast and spent a fab few years in Brighton. I also was the Craft Officer for Brighton & Hove Museums. Whilst near London I took part in a year long drawing and making residency at the Chelsea Physic Garden. This project over a year was fundamental to the origin of my botanical jewellery and the development of my signature graphic and stylised interpretations of plants. It was then two Crafts Council trips to Japan and many shows and fun times in New York that changed my life and eventually took me to the Harley Foundation Studios in Nottinghamshire.
I have recently moved to fabulous new studio of my own which I am still getting used to as it has been beautifully custom built inside and is just an amazing space to be in!
