Sometimes the simplest designs hide the most intricate details.

This impressive 7ct intense yellow diamond has been set into a clean, contemporary design that allows the centre stone to do exactly what it should, take centre stage.

At first glance the setting appears beautifully simple, but a closer look reveals the hand laid out micro pavé detail hidden within the side profile. These are often the details that take the most time and care, adding another layer of craftsmanship without overwhelming the overall design.

A good piece of jewellery doesn’t always need to shout. Sometimes the finest details are the ones discovered over time.

I thought it would be interesting to show a selection of natural gemstones at different stages of their journey.

Featured here are rough crystals, sorted material, stones ready for cutting, and finished gems. There are no heat sapphires from Sri Lanka and Tanzania, Cambodian zircon, quartz, Kenyan gold sheen sapphire, aquamarine, rubies and tourmalines, along with a few stones I’ve cut and polished myself.

One of the things I find fascinating is learning to look beyond a rough crystal and understand its potential. Deciding how a stone should be cut, what shape will best suit the material and how to maximise its beauty is where experience really comes into play.

These stones have all come directly from the people and places where they were mined, including material from Kenya and Sri Lanka that I’ve sourced through trusted contacts over the years. Knowing the story behind a gemstone and understanding its journey from source to finished jewellery is something that’s always been important to me.

On a buying trip to Sri Lanka, visiting the sapphire mines is an important part of the process. Understanding exactly where a gemstone comes from, how it is mined and following its journey from source to finished jewellery is something I place a great deal of importance on.

This footage was taken at an open cast sapphire mine, where every stone begins its journey. By visiting the mines and meeting the people involved, I can gain a far better understanding of the material and its origins. From an ethical sourcing perspective, it does not get much more traceable than seeing the source with your own eyes and following the stone from mine to finished piece.

Every sapphire has a story, and for me that story begins at the source.

A 17ct sapphire hand cut on the jamb peg and set into stainless steel with intricate micro pavé diamond detail through the bridge.

Pieces like this are a good example of why I’ve spent years working with stainless steel alongside traditional precious metals. The strength and behaviour of the material allows for technical setting approaches and structural details that often are not possible in gold or platinum, especially when pushing fine tolerances and minimal metal.

A material normally associated with industry, used here for high end stone setting and jewellery making.
