To Paul Berry
My garden was a wilderness
Nature had triumphed over nurture
More or less!
What to do ? where to turn?
Should we hack and hew
Or should we burn?
Should we bring in an army of men
And start from scratch
All over again?
We scratched our heads
We bit our nails
All, of course, to no avail.
Then someone told us of Paul Berry
An artist in shrubs and topiary
An untiring worker – and no slouch!
He’d work miracles on our house.
And so he did.

Airspading to uncover root system

This week I spent a day helping a friend Bill Rowbottom (Arbocultural Consultant) in North Manchester. The site is due for development with new buildings and we needed to find out how far the root system of an existing fruit tree extended out towards the proposed line of the new footings. Bill used his Air Spade and compressor to uncover the roots without damaging them. We also blew holes around the fruit tree to apply nutrients into the soil via a method called Vertical Mulching.

West Didsbury, row of 7 large Conifers to be removed and stumps ground out. 3 loads of woodchip and 3 loads of log had to be removed. from site. Thanks to Treestation social enterprise at Gorton for their waste disposal operation.

A large limb on an Ash tree had been blown out in a storm and being hung up it needed removing for the safety of the public. The woodland was a Site of Biological Interest and all branches had to be cut, logged and stacked in situ as wildlife habitats.

A local childminder asked me for a few log off cuts for the toddlers to sit on in her garden so I decided to cut a set of table & chairs.

A few pictures from yesterdays job in Prestwich. A twinned stemmed Sycamore growing over 3 gardens and needed removing. All waste had to be taken through the house. We took out 1 load of wood chip and 2 loads of log. A big thanks to Tom & Gaz who helped to get the job done in a day.
