Payne & Son was founded in 1790 and after eight generations is still run by members of the same family. John Payne opened a silversmiths and jewellers in Wallingford in 1790, with other shops opening in Abingdon 1825, Banbury 1842 and Tunbridge Wells 1870, all run by various members of the Payne family. George Septimus Payne inherited the Abingdon shop in 1874, but 14 years later, he decided to move to Oxford. Payne & Son (Goldsmiths), Oxford, started trading in January 1889 and have been at 131 High Street ever since. So now, after 224 years, we have the 7th and 8th generations of Payne's in this family business in Oxford. Payne & Son specialises in 20th century and contemporary silver, as well as modern jewellery; wedding jewellery and is a major stockist of Georg Jensen.

This receipt is from 1961. Note how the Payne & Son hallmark is shown, information on how to find us – ‘opposite the Market Avenues’ and that we sold replicas of the Alfred Jewel.

Even more interesting is the draft of a letter written to the Oxford Mail on the back!

The letter reads: ‘We enclose a photo of the Ascot Gold Cup which we have had the honour to supply this year. It was designed for us by Gerald Whiles and was judged the best of 127 entries in a competition organised by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. The Queen, who takes a close interest in the trophies, approved the design. The clean modern lines will make a fitting complement to the new grandstand to be used for the first time at the Royal meeting this month.’

The horse that won that year was ‘Pandofell’ ridden by Lester Piggott!

This design from 1978 is for a silver and enamel badge of office for the Barclays Bank Oxford District Managers’ Club.

The silversmith who drew this gorgeous sketch was Anthony Hawksley, who worked closely with, retailing his silver and jewellery as well as commissioning pieces for the Oxford Colleges and private collections.

This year we will have been trading in our shop at 131 High Street for 135 years – since 1889! - so we’ll be looking back through some of our archive, at the wide variety of work we’ve created, commissioned and sold over the years.

This design from 1979 is for Chorister’s Badges for the Christchurch Cathedral Choir. The design is based on the college arms. Christchurch was initially known as Cardinal College, after its founder, Henry VIII’s ill-fated right-hand man, Cardinal Wolsey, and this is still represented by the red Cardinal’s ‘galero’ (hat) shown on the arms and in this sketch.

Christ Church Cathedral is both the College Chapel as well as the cathedral church for the Diocese of Oxford. King Henry VIII established the Collegiate Foundation in 1546, including one Organist and eight Lay Clerks, plus provision for a schoolmaster to educate the choristers, and it has been home to many significant church musicians such as John Taverner, William Walton, Simon Preston and Howard Goodall.
