🐚 DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know fossils can actually turn into opal?
Millions of years ago, shells, plants and even the remains of prehistoric animals became buried beneath the ground. Over time, water containing tiny amounts of silica could seep into the spaces they left behind.
Very slowly, this silica could replace or fill the original material and, under the right conditions, form opal while preserving the shape of the fossil. ✨
Australia is famous for these incredible opalised fossils, and some even display the beautiful flashes of rainbow colour we see in precious opal. 🌈
It's an amazing combination of a gemstone and a glimpse into prehistoric life, preserved together for millions of years.
