Just a few days to go for voting in the Northants Life Awards! 🩶 I’ve been trying to think about everything we’ve done since winning our Special Achievement Award last year… and we all know how hard thinking is for me sometimes! šŸ˜‚ But wow… what a year it’s been for Silver Strength ⭐
šŸ“» We’ve been on the radio TWICE
šŸ“ŗ Ann and I went on LIVE TV teaching doctors and physios all about the importance of falls prevention classes
šŸ’» Behind the scenes, I’ve helped put together a nationwide webpage for falls prevention classes
šŸ’° Together we’ve raised just shy of Ā£1000 for some amazing charities
🩶 We’ve welcomed lots of new friends into our classes and helped them achieve their goals.
🩶 We’ve supported each other through tough times and celebrated the good times too.
🩶 And we continue to shine like the Silver Strength stars we all are. Falls prevention classes are about so much more than exercise. They’re about confidence, friendship, laughter, independence and making sure nobody feels alone. So with just a few days left, if you’ve voted already — THANK YOU! This week has been a tough one as an instructor. It’s been hot, motivation is melting faster than ice cream and at one point I think even the resistance bands were considering staying home. BUT… today one of my lovely Silver Strength ladies said something that honestly stopped me in my tracks. She’d been over to Australia visiting her daughter who she hadn’t seen for quite a while. Her daughter noticed how much better her mobility was, how much steadier she seemed and how much stronger she was walking. And how confident she was. And this lady told me how she felt more confident, that she enjoyed class, how she looked foward to coming each week. And said that she believed her improvment was all because of the class! HOW AMAZING. Honestly… THAT is why we do it. These classes are never about becoming a fitness model or wearing tiny Lycra shorts (thank goodness for everyone involved). They’re about keeping people strong, independent, mobile and smiling. And you Silver Strength lot absolutely amaze me every single week. You work hard and you support each other. And most importantly… you prove that getting older does NOT mean giving up. So if you’ve ever sat there thinking: ā€œOh it won’t make much differenceā€¦ā€ Trust me it does and even I was proved this today.

One day at a time this week, tomorrow classes are on. You all know by now that I like to push you… because I believe in you. And I want YOU to believe in yourselves too. Self-doubt can be crippling — and quite frankly, it’s not welcome on my watch. That’s why I’m tough sometimes.That’s why I challenge you. HOWEVER…This week I’ve decided we are doing things a little differently. It’s going to be unusually hot and although yes… our rooms have air con, and yes… we are grown adults who will arrive armed with water bottles (and possibly dreams of gin šŸøšŸ˜‚)… your safety always comes first whilst you’re in my care. So for ONE WEEK ONLY… we soften. Yes yes, calm down everyone — apparently I can do soft. šŸ˜Our Move to the Beat classes will become a gentle stretch-and-sway routine this week. Slow, steady, effective movement designed to keep you moving safely in the heat. Our Falls Prevention classes will focus on seated strengthening exercises, gentle mobility and controlled movement. Please don’t be afraid to come to class this week. We WILL still move, we WILL still laugh, just at a slower pace. Please bring water. Please take your time. Please listen to your body. And if I catch anyone dramatically melting onto the floor shouting ā€œNiki this is too much excitementā€ā€¦ I’ll simply fan you gently and carry on counting.

Not every week is a ā€œsmash our goalsā€ week… and that’s ok too. Some weeks are harder than others. Sometimes we slow down, take a breath, regroup and just focus on getting through one day at a time. That’s why I’m so grateful for my wonderful Silver Strength Stars. Your kindness, support and ability to keep smiling and laughing through it all means more than you know. BUT… before you all think this means you get a free pass this weekend… absolutely not šŸ˜† Yes, it’s going to be HOT ā˜€ļø which means Jayne and Gill… plenty of water in between that gin please šŸ˜‚šŸøDavid, easy on the champagne.šŸ˜‰
And Bob… don’t think the sunshine gets you out of those tiptoes and calf raises either!
Slowly does it though people 😜
Keep moving, but maybe a little steadier and a little slower than usual, with a bottle of water close by. You’re all adults… you know the drill by now šŸ˜†. Stay cool, stay safe but keep those legs moving.

Today is Wednesday, Winning Wednesday so lets celebrate some wins. I dont know about you but Im fed up of hearing reasons why getting older sucks. We all know about the droops, the aches, pains and groans. What about the good things about aging? The amazing exercise classes you can attend? šŸ˜‚
The grandchildren you can give back at the end of the day? šŸ˜‚ The seat on the bus?
Growing older may bring a few aches, creaks and wobbling knees… but it also brings laughter, resilience, friendships, wisdom and appreciating the little things a whole lot more. So what are your favourite things about getting older? Id love to know.....pop them below.

Only THREE Silver Strength classes this week Now before rumours start… no, I haven’t run away to join a travelling dance troupe or become a full-time gin tester. Nor have I joined Mr Motivator on his cruise ship teaching Otago falls prevention classes not just yet šŸ˜‚
Silver Strength HQ is just having a tiny little maintenance week. I shall practice my counting skills šŸ˜‚ Honestly… these classes are never just about exercise, are they?
They’re about the laughs before we start. The check-ins. The friendships. The ā€œyou alright?ā€ moments. The people who notice when someone’s missing. The encouragement when someone’s having a wobble. And the feeling of walking out just that little bit lighter than when we walked in. Please dont forget the whats app group is always available if anyone needs a chat. So although there are only three classes this week, I already know they’ll still be full of heart, terrible counting, dodgy dance moves and the best people. See you in class.

Today was a different kind of day šŸ’œ
Some days you just have to throw out the rule book and listen to what your body says… and what your head says too. And today, our classes looked very different. And that’s OK. In one class, someone asked if we could focus on stair walking and sideways walking because their confidence had become so low it was starting to affect everyday life. So that’s exactly what we did. In another class, the mood was just a little flat. We weren’t feeling it. Maybe it was the weather, maybe tiredness, maybe life… but the class just wasn’t flowing the way it normally does. So… we changed it. We turned the music up louder, moved muscles we hadn’t used in a long time, had a good laugh and slowly the smiles started to come back. One lovely lady shared that she can now reach up and open a blind she couldn’t open before. To some people that might sound like a tiny thing… but to her it was HUGE. That’s why what we do matters. Sometimes the biggest victories aren’t medals or marathons. Sometimes they’re confidence, independence, reaching a blind, walking sideways without fear, or simply turning up on a hard day. What could have been a difficult day actually became a day full of smiles… all because we threw away the rule book and did it our way. Always listen to how you feel inside yourself. Trust it. And remember… I’ve got you. ✨

This week is and honestly, I’m a little torn on it all really.
We shouldn’t need a hashtag or a special week to remind us to talk about something so important… but at the same time, if it helps even one person feel less alone, then it matters One thing I do know is that our Silver Strength community is incredible at looking after each other. šŸ’œ The WhatsApp chats, the coffee mornings, the ā€œHow are you really?ā€ moments before class starts… they all matter more than you probably realise.
Sometimes the conversations in class even shock me šŸ˜‚ I’ve learned a LOT from you lot over the years… and don’t panic Silver Strength Stars… what happens in class stays in class šŸ‘€šŸ˜‚ But being serious for just one second… mental health doesn’t care about age, strength, confidence, or ability. Anyone can struggle at any time. So just know this… for that one hour in class, you can simply be you.
No pressure. No judgement. No pretending.

Sir David Attenborough turned 100 this week
And honestly… I think he might be onto something when he says:
ā€œPeople are happiest when they are outdoors.ā€
Fresh air. Sunshine. Movement. A little walk. Standing tall in the garden practicing your heel-to-toe It doesn’t have to be a marathon.
Sometimes wellbeing is simply putting both feet on the ground, lifting your face to the sunshine and moving your body a little.
Your Silver Strength homework this weekend?
Get outside if you can. Stretch. Walk. Breathe. Balance. And remember… movement is about what’s possible today. Enjoy the sunshine.

The next couple of weeks may look a little different at some of our Silver Strength classes and for that I am sorry šŸ’œ
Sometimes even world-class instructors need to pop themselves in for a little maintenance and oil change too šŸ˜‚
But don’t panic… I’ll still be posting homework and exercises in our WhatsApp groups, so there will be no escaping the core work, heel-to-toe practice or standing tall and proud This week has been a tough one at times, but you have all worked so hard. The core work has been improving, the heel-to-toe walking has definitely challenged a few of you, and I couldn’t be prouder of the effort everyone is putting in. Joy was just amazing at her heal to toe today. David smashed not using the band at my Higham group his rep count is getting bigger and bigger and I couldnt be more proud of him. And Jenny from my Earls Barton group well her posture has improved so much. I can see such a difference in you all. I do hope you can too. Be proud my silver strength stars. X
And finally… thank you. A HUGE thank you for all the kindness, hugs, flowers, messages and of course cake šŸ° you’ve given me this week. The love and support from this community honestly means more than you know. Right… enough emotion. Back to practicing those leg raises 😁.
