Modify Your Own Ring for Ashes 🤍

Christine came to us through our online shop and ordered our Modify Your Own Ring for Ashes’ service – a way of adapting your own jewellery so it can hold something precious from someone you have lost, such as ashes, hair or fur.

Christine wanted to create something incredibly personal from two of her existing rings. Her original engagement ring had sadly lost its diamond and the setting was old and worn. She also sent us her eternity ring, wanting the gold from both pieces to be brought together into one new memorial ring.

Mark carefully removed the old setting from her engagement ring and unset the diamonds from her eternity ring. Christine wanted to keep those diamonds, so they were safely returned to her alongside the finished ring.

The eternity ring was then melted down and transformed into the new setting. Through a combination of annealing, rolling, shaping, soldering, laser welding, filing and polishing, Mark handmade a completely new setting to fit the original ring.

Once the metalwork was finished, it was time for me to create the memorial element.

Christine chose Sapphire Blue resin with a delicate pale gold glitter overlay to complement the colour of her ring. I built up the resin in fine layers, curing each one under a UV lamp before carefully hand-placing the lightest pieces of her late husband's ashes.

A final protective layer was added before the ring was left to fully cure for seven days.

The result was a completely unique memorial ring, created using Christine's own gold, her original ring and the precious ashes of her husband.

When Christine received it, she sent us a simple message that said everything:
Thank you so much for my ring. I love it.🤍

This was such an in-depth piece of work, and there are **so many photographs showing the process from start to finish** that we simply couldn't fit them all here!

We were absolutely inundated with entries, and we genuinely loved reading all of your reasons for wanting to win the pendant.

There were so many lovely, personal and heartfelt stories. It was wonderful to hear what the pendant would have meant to you, whether it was a special gift for someone you love, a celebration of an important milestone, or simply something beautiful that you would have treasured.

Stretching a Wedding Band to Fit 💍

Wayne emailed me because his wedding band no longer fitted. The good news? If you have a plain, substantial wedding band with no gemstones or engraving, it may be possible to stretch it rather than add or remove metal.

Wayne booked a private design consultation with me, where I measured his finger and assessed the ring. He needed his 18ct two-tone gold wedding band stretched from a size V to a size Y – three sizes!

This particular ring was substantial enough to tolerate the process. Very thin bands can be too delicate to stretch and may need a piece of gold adding instead.

Mark started by annealing the gold, gently heating the ring to ‘cherry red’ – the point just before it melts – and allowing it to cool slowly. This softens the gold and makes it more malleable.

The ring was then placed onto our ring stretcher. As the lever is moved, the tool gradually expands the ring. Mark repeatedly removed and turned the band so that both sides stretched evenly.

Halfway through, the ring had reached a size X. A little more stretching and it reached the required size Y.

Stretching can leave the edges slightly sharp, so Mark carefully sanded them smooth before refining the inside of the band to remove any marks from the process.

We always include a clean and polish when we stretch a wedding band, so Wayne's ring came back looking beautifully refreshed. Mark polished both the inside and outside before it went through our ultrasonic cleaner to remove every trace of polishing compound.

Wayne is a busy businessman, so we securely couriered his ring back to him.

He kindly left us this lovely review:

Engraved Doctorate Signet Ring

Nahory emailed me about creating an engraved doctorate signet ring to celebrate an incredible achievement – her second doctorate!

She had just graduated from the University of the West of England with a Doctorate in Psychology, and wanted a second signet ring to commemorate the occasion. She had commissioned one after her first doctorate, so this new ring would mark another very special milestone.

Nahory wanted a 10mm round signet in yellow gold. We discussed the differences between 9ct and 14ct yellow gold before she chose 9ct – a practical and hardwearing choice for a ring designed to be worn and treasured.

We cast the signet using the ancient art of lost wax casting before turning our attention to the engraving.

Nahory had a very specific vision. She wanted the University of the West of England’s coat of arms to cover as much of the top of the signet as possible, with ‘DCPsych’ engraved on one shoulder and ‘2026’ on the other.

Inside the ring, she wanted her name and the exact date she graduated.

She sent over the university coat of arms and Stuart created the engraving artwork for her to approve. After a couple of small adjustments, we were ready to engrave.

The finished signet was engraved on the top, both shoulders and inside the band. For the external engraving, we removed the background so the coat of arms and lettering stood proud, creating a beautifully crisp finish.

Our laser engraver can achieve an incredible level of detail, but the precision of the engraving can leave a slightly sharp edge. Mark carefully polished the ring inside and out to remove this and make sure it was comfortable to wear.

Nahory asked about adding a black background to the engraving. I showed her examples of black resin and enamel, but she was so delighted with the engraving that she decided to leave it exactly as it was.

Nahory came to collect her finished signet one Saturday morning. It was such a pleasure to meet her in person and congratulate her on this incredible achievement.

She immediately put her new signet on her finger… and wore it all the way home!

Family Gold Memorial Ring 🤍

Melissa contacted me about creating a family gold memorial ring for her daughter. She had sentimental gold she wanted to use in the design, along with ashes that she wished to display in resin.

It was important that gold from Grandma June’s rings was incorporated into the new piece, and that it held the ashes of Grandma Linda. This ring would bring together both sides of the family in one deeply meaningful piece for her daughter to wear and treasure.

Mark carefully removed two small diamonds from the original rings, which were later used in separate pieces of jewellery for Melissa herself. Melissa had also sent us additional family gold, including broken chains, odd earrings and a bangle, all of which would be melted down and re-used.

The bangle contained a base metal core, which Mark removed before melting, as this could contaminate the gold. The family gold was then carefully cleaned, melted and poured into an ingot mould, ready to be transformed into a new ring.

Melissa wanted a chunky heart-shaped design with a substantial band. Mark annealed and rolled the gold, repeatedly softening and shaping it before cutting out the ring and forming it to the correct size. He then handmade the heart setting, soldered it into place and polished the ring to a beautiful shine.

With the metalwork complete, it was my turn to create the memorial resin.

Melissa had chosen a beautiful off-white colour called 'interference gold’, which has a subtle golden hue that perfectly complements yellow gold. I built this colour up in delicate layers, curing each one under a UV lamp.

Once the base was complete, I carefully hand-placed the ashes in a gentle scatter pattern, selecting the whitest pieces so they stood out beautifully against the soft golden background.

When Melissa was happy with the placement, I added a clear layer of resin to seal everything in place before giving the ring its final polish.

This family gold memorial ring brought together precious memories, sentimental gold and two much-loved grandmothers in one very special piece of jewellery. 🤍

Custom Fit Curved Eternity Ring 💎

Claire and Tony booked a private design consultation with me to create a custom fit curved eternity ring. We had previously sized and repaired Claire’s engagement ring and wedding band, so it was lovely to welcome them back.

Claire’s wedding set was platinum, and she wanted her eternity ring made from the same precious metal and set with diamonds. She wasn’t sure which setting style she wanted or how the ring would fit around her engagement ring.

We discussed the options and Claire was drawn to a rubover setting, where platinum is gently pressed around the outside of the gemstone to securely hold it in place.

I measured the diamonds in Claire’s engagement ring and suggested curving the eternity ring around them, allowing it to sit flush without rubbing.

Claire also had questions about lab-grown and natural diamonds, so I prepared quotations showing different diamond sizes and quantities, with separate prices for both options.

After discussing everything over their wedding anniversary holiday, Claire and Tony chose seven natural diamonds, matching the quality of her engagement ring, set in platinum.

Claire approved the CAD images and asked to try a 3D resin print before we cast the ring. This allowed us to check the size and proportions and, most importantly, make sure it fitted perfectly around her engagement ring.

Claire returned to try it on and was delighted with the look and feel.

We then cast the ring in platinum and carefully ‘cleaned up’ the casting, removing the fine texture left from the casting process. The seven diamonds were rubover set into their made-to-measure settings before the ring was polished to a beautiful high shine.

Finally, the Birmingham Assay Office applied our full UK hallmark.

It was such a pleasure to create this for Claire and Tony. A platinum curved eternity ring, set with seven natural high-grade diamonds and designed specifically to fit around her engagement ring – the perfect finishing touch to her wedding set. 🤍
