Hi! I am Yuka from Yuka Jourdain Jewellery .
Now I am making matching studs for the bird pendants inspired by the birds I encountered in High Peak. They will come with me at High Peak Open Studios .

I first make the frames in Sterling Silver, then oxidize them. Then I make felt before stitching and combining them.

It is amazing to find such a magnificent colourful bird living nearby. The image of the pheasant lingers in my mind and I created my piece of jewellery. I hope someone will like them as much as I do. ☺️🐦

This month we have been posting about “growth, strength, new beginnings, dreaming to doing”. Thanks for the lovely prompt Julia Brownsword .

Who got up at 6am, started training before 7, and finished shopping by 8:30 this morning? That’s me Yuka Jourdain Jewellery and I’m so proud.

I could find many excuses, but I’ve been sitting too long time, working, and engaging with digital devices lately. It’s not only children who need a break from screens but adults, including me!

Once I stepped outside into the spring sunshine, everything shifted. Birds were already busy, flying back and forth with twigs, beginning a new day. I can wake up early without much struggle so I just need to use my time well and cut back on digital distractions to create space in my mind.

This pigeon piece is created using the technique of chasing and repoussé, a very old skill that dates back to Ancient Egypt. The process involves shaping metal by working from both the front and the back to create form, which is a simple idea, and I love that it requires only a minimal set of tools, especially at a small scale of making. The dialogue with the material is meditative and synchronizes with my breathing.

There are so many stories about pigeons in the world and they are symbols of peace, bravery, wisdom, messenger, and sacredness. I hope this pigeon brings peace and stability in this current world.

Today it is my turn Yuka Jourdain Jewellery to talk about ‘Emotional connection’ prompted by The Peak Potter . Thank you Louise for another interesting prompt.

Walking in the countryside is not entirely restful. My eyes cannot be still; they wander from shape to texture to colour, each calling for attention. I am drawn to the soft, round velvet of moss, to the delicate ribs lining the backs of mushrooms, to dried seeds and fruits that hold intricate architectures within their weightless bodies. I linger over the fibres of the helicopter seed, its outer form faded, yet its delicate inner structure still perfectly intact. I notice, too, the quiet transformation of rusted pipes, their surfaces blooming into unexpected shades as they surrender to time.

The act of making — of handling materials and transforming forms inspired by what I find — becomes my way of entering into dialogue with them, drawing their quiet wonder into my own lived experience.

Get • Some moments are emotional. They arrive unexpectedly, in the most ordinary parts of our daily routine. A bright evening sky and the warmth of your emotion feel almost identical. And it is so nice when you can respond to them. When we can do that, we should cherish the moment — and even make jewellery out of it.
