Then we do the whole process again but with fine silver, recycled of course. So people ask isn’t this just plating? And in theory the silver process is, but normal plating is a very thin (microscopic) flash layer applied to the surface. We apply for much longer - several hours compared to minutes, thereby allowing a much thicker coat. We do vary our process, depending on the design - some we leave with just copper, some have a mix of copper & silver and the rest have a heavy coat of silver.

One of our favourites of the year! Pop it in your diary 😉

Next stage … into the tank for the initial copper strike - we use recycled copper and send through a current in the electrolytic solution to start growing a solid metallic shell around the opal, where we have applied the conductive paint layer.

Then we carefully paint the opal with silver conductive paint and attach bail ring ready for the first process of electroforming. This process allows us to control exactly where we want the copper & silver to form, although it is subject to other factors during the process too (time, temperature etc). But the beauty of this process means we can have no wastage, as it will form a strong bond carefully to where we want it.

Next step in our Coober Pedy journey following grinding is to polish each piece we have prepared so far with Cerium Oxide ….

Next stage…. Opal cut and now for grinding on our own built cabbing machine through a process of 7 diamond wheels
