"When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light."

One of the most recognisable quotes from The Last of Us, engraved around the outside of a ring using the Nano 60W and rotary attachment.

Custom engraving is no longer limited to dates and initials. Quotes from favourite games, films, books, and personal milestones are becoming an increasingly popular way to create jewellery with real meaning.

With the right setup, even long engravings can wrap cleanly around a curved surface while remaining crisp and readable.

A brilliant example of how laser engraving can help jewellers offer something truly personal.

What quote would you choose?

Karat or Costume Jewellery? ✨

Luke's new to the jewellery industry, but that didn't stop him making a confident prediction on this bracelet.

Matt wasn't so sure, so before reaching for the SciAps Powerhouse Precious Metal Analyser, he used the laser welder's built-in microscope for a closer look. What he saw told a very different story.

One of the overlooked benefits of having a laser welder in the workshop is that the microscope quickly becomes useful for far more than just welding.

Were you right? Let us know in the comments.

The customer is collecting in ten minutes! 😱

Paul Paine at The Goldsmiths' Centre shows just how quickly a bolt ring repair can be completed with a laser welder. Close the join, weld it, refine it, and get it back to the customer without disrupting the rest of your day.

That is one of the biggest advantages of laser welding in a busy workshop. Routine repairs can be turned around quickly and confidently, leaving more time for the intricate jobs that truly require your attention.

Bolt rings might not be the most exciting jobs on the bench, but they are a lot more enjoyable when they only take a few minutes.

What repair do you find your laser welder saves the most time on?

Before you test, what clues can you spot? 🔍

Hallmarks, stamps, colour, wear patterns, and construction methods. Experienced jewellers can read a lot from a piece before it ever reaches an analyser.

In this bracelet, Matt spots several clues under the microscope. Some point one way, others raise questions. One charm in particular raises more questions than answers.

It's also a good reminder that the microscope on your laser welder can be useful for far more than repairs — helping you inspect details that are easy to miss with the naked eye.

Of course, observation can only take you so far.

That's where the SciAps Powerhouse Precious Metal Analyser comes in, delivering precise precious metal analysis and removing the guesswork when it matters most.

Would you have reached the same conclusion before the test?

More jewellers should offer this.

Using the Nano 60W, we engraved a lyric from Hadestown "we raise our cups" inside this ring, a small detail with a lot of personal meaning.

It is a great example of how laser engraving opens the door to more creative and personal commissions. Quotes, lyrics, private jokes, handwriting, there is a lot more you can offer clients than just wedding dates.

And, thankfully, far easier than trying to hand-engrave song lyrics around the inside of a band.

This ring was destined for the charity shop  😱

Using the SciAps X5 precious metal analyser, we tested a collection of jewellery to find out what was really hiding beneath the surface, because appearances are often misleading.

Not everything that looks valuable is valuable.
And not everything in the bargain bin belongs there.

With fast, non-destructive XRF analysis and precise alloy readings in seconds, the SciAps X5 helps jewellers, gold buyers, pawnbrokers, and workshop owners make decisions with confidence rather than assumption.

So, how many did you get right before the reveal?

When you can fine-tune your laser, everything changes.

In the latest demo from Paul Paine at The Goldsmiths’ Centre, we explore one of the biggest differences between entry-level laser welders and more advanced systems: the ability to properly fine-tune pulse timing and power to solve real workshop problems.

Machines like the DaDo have opened the door to laser welding for many jewellers, and for good reason. They give workshops the chance to experience just how transformative laser welding can be in day-to-day repairs and production.

But as your workload grows and your confidence develops, greater control becomes a serious advantage.

With machines like the MS35 and Onyx, you can adjust pulse duration and power with far more precision, allowing you to work differently rather than simply working harder.

Especially on metals like silver, where managing heat and energy transfer becomes critical.

This is the kind of knowledge that turns a laser welder from a useful tool into the backbone of your workshop.

What tricks or settings do you swear by when welding silver?

Do you know what your laser welder is actually capable of?

On 13 July 2026, we will be holding an intensive Laser Welding Training Day at Freeform HQ in Stevenage, designed for jewellers who want to work faster, take on more complex repairs, and get real return from their machine.

This is not a quick overview session.

You will spend the day working alongside professional jeweller and laser welding specialist Paul Paine. The focus is practical application, real workflow improvements, and the techniques that genuinely save time at the bench.

We cover everything from chain repair, jump rings and bolt rings through to porosity repair, resizing, re clawing, re tipping, settings, troubleshooting, workflow optimisation and more.

Because the difference between owning a laser welder and mastering one can cost thousands in lost efficiency over time.

If you want to increase confidence, improve productivity, and get the absolute maximum from your machine, this training is built for exactly that.

Early bird places are available until 13 June 2025.

Book your place through the link in our bio.

A must have in your laser welding toolbox.

At our workshop hosted by the Goldsmiths’ Centre, Paul Paine demonstrates a surprisingly simple trick for improving laser welding performance on silver.

Because silver conducts heat so efficiently, it can sometimes feel reluctant under the laser, dissipating energy before you get the result you want.

The solution? A standard black marker pen.

By darkening the surface, the laser achieves noticeably better absorption and stronger initial action, without changing power settings or adjusting the machine.

Simple, inexpensive, and invaluable workshop knowledge from someone who spends a lot of time behind a laser welder.

Follow for more demonstrations and practical techniques.

£5 well spent… or £5 well wasted?

This ring was found hidden underneath the lining of a jewellery box bought for just £5, and at first glance, we thought we knew exactly what it was.

Turns out, precious metals can still surprise even experienced eyes.

Using the SciAps X5, we were able to test different areas of the ring separately, including the shank and setting, revealing far more than a standard test ever could.

Because when values are high, assumptions get expensive.

What would your guess have been before the scan?
