When at art school in the 60s my art teacher Phil Upchurch wrote 'old hat'
across my drawing of a realistic landscape with a house and a figure, for many years I pondered on that and in the end I realized he was right . We have been copyists and colourists reproducing other artist's styles and subjects for a captured audience . I wanted to use the style I have sketched in all my life, a loose and emotional way that quickly sets the painting and its shape, the medium falling where it wished and I used little control, watching for images to appear naturally. My critics want me to paint realism. I find the metaphysical and fantasy much more interesting but less lucrative.. but artists suffer for their artistry .I am preoccupied with 3 things I suppose as I have grown older and less precious about my image, the fear of struggle to survive, the predatory male, and female passion . none of which I fully understand and most of the images are my thoughts and the inconclusive conclusions during sleepless nights .. many of my images are dreams.
