Very exciting news!!!
I've been selected as one of five jewellers, to receive a £2000 grant from the Goldsmiths' Centre and Goldsmiths' Foundation.

"The Business Catalyst (Small) Grants are designed to remove barriers to growth, helping sole traders and micro-businesses that have undertaken formal mentoring, consultancy or business diagnostic programmes turn development plans into practical action. From equipment that brings previously outsourced processes in-house to specialist training that expands the scope of a maker’s work, the grants support investments that can be challenging to make at an early stage, but can have a lasting impact on productivity, profitability and creative potential. Together, the five projects demonstrate how targeted investment can support business development, from strengthening specialist skills and bringing processes in-house to improving routes to market."

Totally forgot to do the giveaway draw last night (it's been a crazy first fortnight of the new term.
The winner is... Andrew Wells
On the voucher validity question, 9 months got the most votes. It's the easiest in terms of admin, and could help focus minds on getting workshops booked. But I don't want people to feel cheated.
I'll ponder it some more.

I need your advice, and if you've followed me for a long time, you'll know that I like to run a giveaway in return for that advice.

So, I want to know how long a voucher for one of my jewellery making lessons, should be valid for?
I sell these vouchers all year round, but most as christmas gifts. Usually people then completely forget about them for a year. This means that I get a flurry of people wanting lessons right when I'm in the middle of the next christmas rush.
To account for this, I don't do any teaching during November, December & January (for the tax return rush).
But, in order to have the voucher valid for a full 12 months, I currently add on another 3 months to the next year.
So in practice, a voucher bought for christmas 2025 can be used February 2026 - October 2026, plus February 2027 - April 2027.
This is so confusing as well as being a logistical nightmare.

So the question is: would February - October (9 consecutive months) be an acceptable amount of time for vouchers to be valid?
Or do you feel strongly that it should it be a full 12 months (spread over 15 months)?

Managed to snap some pictures yesterday.
Remodelled 9ct ruby ring.
Silver amethyst engagement ring.
And some super cute mini tabasco geode earrings.

Feels like I've not posted anything in ages.
Despite the heat, I have got some things finished.
1. Silver pendant with sentimental 22ct gold and a lab diamond.
2. Pink tourmaline stud earrings in 9ct gold.
3. A new pin for a vintage Scandinavian hair decoration.
4. Replacement moss agate for a bracelet. Cut to fit at Bristol Lapidary Society Bristol Lapidary Club

I did try. Honest.
I opened the shop today because the forecast was 29 degrees. Still hotter than hell, but a bit better than the past few days.
Well, the car said it was 34, and at one point the air conditioner (which kept shutting down because it couldn't cope) said it was 42!!! 🥵
But at least these two beauties got collected.
On the left: melty effect ring set with seaglass.
And on the right: memorial ring with abalone/paua shell hiding a compartment containing ashes.

This coming week is going to be a weird one.
Firstly, tomorrow the shop will only be open 11am - 2pm. That's because I'll be heading to Nailsworth to sing in the above concert. Tickets are still available I think.
I'll then be open on Sunday afternoon, before the temperature gets too high for the rest of the week 🥵
It's then quite likely that I won't be open until next Saturday.
Both my laser welder and air conditioner can't cope when it gets up towards 30 degrees.
But do get in touch if you have a repair to collect, as I can definitely pop in for you.

At the Bristol Beacon tonight for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra featuring organ megastar Anna Lapwood 🥳
First half is over and she's done an impromptu piece from Interstellar 🌟
But what we're all here for is the Saint Saens Organ Symphony (yes the one from Babe).
It's an emotional one for me as my dad brought me here to see it when I was about 10(?). He knew what was coming and was waiting for me jump out of my skin at "that bit".
Chances of me bawling the whole way through... 110%
