This is the Chinese Year of the Fire Horse.
Chinese astrology is based on two cycles: the 12 year cycle of animals and the 10 components comprising of the five elements each in both yin and yang aspects.
Every 60 years, the 2 cycles combine. Thus 1906, 1966 and now 2026 are Fire Yang Horse years.

How many of us make a New Years Resolution?
How many of those resolutions last to the end of January?
Most of you reading this already practice Tai Chi or Qigong, well done! But.....
How many of you practice regularly away from class?
According to the NHS website: we should do some type of physical activity everyday.
Exercising just twice a week can reduce your risk of many illnesses and lower early death by 30%, phew so who wouldn't do it?
Still need convincing?
One exercise that strengthens and combats muscle loss is Tai Chi. It is a low intensity aerobic exercise. Practicing at least twice a week can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, Type 2 Diabetes and improve your blood pressure and balance.
So, not just a new years resolution to be broken, a lifetime of better health awaits you.
Classes with Tai Chi for Well-Being on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays for a healthier and happier New Year.

It is that time of year again where stress and mental health come under enormous pressure. To have more, to give more, to eat more, to spend more.... the list goes on. This is one of my favourite passages from the Tao Te Ching:

Fame or integrity, which is more important?
Money or happiness, which is more valuable?
Success or failure, which is more destructive?

If you look to others for fulfilment you will never be truly fulfilled.
If your happiness depends on money, you will never be happy with yourself.

Be content with what you have, rejoice in the way things are. When you realise there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.

Tai Chi and Qigong are low impact, joint friendly and adaptable to almost any health condition. Gyms and aerobics can be higher impact which can aggravate pain or issues. The benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong often stand out more when people are managing medical issues or recovering from illness. One of the strongest benefits is improved balance, coordination and posture. Tai Chi and Qigong can be started at any age and continued for life because they are gentle and adaptable. Slow, controlled movements builds energy without exhaustion, supports circulation, breathing and relaxation. Not forgetting the excellent social side of exercising with others in a calm environment and a cuppa after to catch up with each other.

To all those starting out on their journey with Tai Chi. Enjoy the experience. Don't get disheartened because others are 'better' than you judge yourself to be. There is no time limit, no race to run.

Tai Chi Ruler.
No, not used for measuring though usually 12" long. It is a wooden dowel with larger contoured ends. It may have been derived from an ancient Chinese sword handle.
The ruler is held in the palms of your hand stimulating a acupressure point called the Palace of Weariness. The exercise is done in slow repetitions and breathing to coordinate breath, mental and visual concentration. It shifts body weight between both legs, this directs and balances the flow of qi.
The history of the ruler may be legend or myth. It is said that the founder was a famous Taoist hermit named Chen Tuan (871-989). His skills were passed down orally to other masters to protect its secrecy no notes were allowed.
As a holistic and strength training exercise it is brilliant.

I have always been taught that your knees should not go beyond your toes when practicing Tai Chi. Some disagree. If they do go beyond the toes it puts undue strain on the patellar tendon and patellofemoral joint. 1 in 3 adults will suffer with patellofemoral pain in their life, so lets look after our knees and keep them safe from injury. It is also important to keep your knee inline with the whole of the foot, don't let the knee collapse in towards the big toe and bend out towards the little toe.
