Kikuo Ibe, born in 1952, was a young Japanese engineer working at Casio when a pivotal accident shaped his career. In the early 1980s, he accidentally dropped the watch his father had given him, breaking it. This loss inspired Ibe to take on an ambitious challenge: to create a watch that was virtually indestructible, able to withstand drops, shocks, and extreme environments.
For months, Ibe tirelessly designed and tested over 200 prototypes, even throwing watches out of the company bathroom window to test their durability. His hard work paid off in 1983 with the release of the first G-Shock model, the DW-5000C. Its rugged design, water resistance, and shock-proof features were revolutionary and unlike anything else on the market at the time.
While the initial launch went largely unnoticed in Japan, the G-Shock became an instant hit in the United States among police officers, military personnel, athletes, industrial workers, and extreme sports enthusiasts. Over time, it became an icon of toughness and reliability. Its reputation grew so strong that NASA approved it as one of only three watches suitable for space missions, alongside the Timex Ironman and Omega Speedmaster. Since then, the G-Shock has accompanied astronauts aboard space shuttles and the International Space Station, carrying into orbit the legacy born from a single broken watch.
