This is my graduating year at Edinburgh College of Art, back in 2004. We had all just finished our show at New Designers, in London and were about to head out into the world as jewellers, designers, educators, creatives…

A couple of weeks ago, an announcement was made by ECA that the jewellery degree course is going to be closed (along with Textiles and Performance Costume). An end of an era for sure, but more than that, it is yet another blow to the wider world of the creative arts.

For generations, art degrees have provided a space for creativity, experimentation and craftsmanship - helping emerging artists and designers to develop skills that can shape the future of their discipline.

The loss of these courses means more than the closure of a few degrees. It risks the loss of specialist knowledge, facilities, teaching expertise and a unique creative community.

Jewellery is not simply about making pretty things. It is a study of our history, our culture. It tells the stories of our lives and those who have come before us. Supporting specialist education means supporting the next generation of makers, artists and designers.

Twenty-two years on, I still feel enormously grateful that I had the chance to study at ECA. The skills and experiences I gained over my degree course continue to influence me today.

“Thank you Clare and Paul for your compassion and dignity that you gave me throughout the process of designing a very special memorial ring.

From our first meeting in the shop, although I’ve know Paul from our school days but not seen him since then, Clare went through designs to turn my late husband’s wedding ring in to a memorial ring with his ashes embedded in resin.

Andy was an avid Arsenal supporter and as Ruby was his birth stone, Clare wanted to get the correct red that matched both.

I can’t express how pleased I am with the beautiful ring that Paul and Clare have made for me…his ashes are so vivid, I now wear this ring which had bought memories of my husband back to life❤️❤️”

Three years ago today! How did that happen?! It feels like only yesterday and at the same time like a lifetime ago!

We’re taking the day off to celebrate. To remember our gorgeous wedding day and enjoy the sunshine - let’s face it, it’ll never rain on the 5th August again! 😉

To anyone planning their wedding at the moment, enjoy every minute, it will soon be just a beautiful memory 😘

Sometimes the beauty is in the damage. It tells a story…

This beautiful opal was once in an engagement ring. Over 50 years ago it was smashed, a devastating collision with a handbag clasp 🙈

Yesterday, my customer collected her pendant with her mother’s beautiful opal, set securely in its new mount. We didn’t try and hide the crack, instead making a feature of it. The damage is what tells the story of its history, a beautiful family piece that can be worn and enjoyed once more 🥹

What do I mean when I say that I’m a jewellery designer?

1) I don’t just draw pretty pictures (although I do that too 😉). I design jewellery for YOU! I help you create jewellery that suits your lifestyle.

2) Jewellery that stands the test of time, even if you’re very clumsy, or want to wear it every single day.

3) Jewellery that suits your personality. That people will admire and say, “that’s so you!”

4) I will help you choose the perfect stone that not only looks beautiful but is suitable to wear as much as you want to.

5) I’ll advise against stones, designs or metals which wouldn’t be suitable for you and your lifestyle.

6) I’ll help you realise what you actually want and more importantly, what you don’t want!
(It’s all about asking the right questions.)

7) I will never force you to spend more than you can afford and I will always advise you honestly (even if that means going for the smaller stone 😉).

8) I’m here to help you design a piece of jewellery that will suit you in every way. It’s not just about creating something pretty but something that you will love for years to come 🥰

This huge brooch was brought to us to make into something more wearable. Our customer wanted a dress ring that could be worn a lot, so it had to be suitable for everyday knocks.

We chatted through the options and I drew up the designs. What was chosen was this one of a kind, asymmetric ring - a beautifully modern piece that you wouldn’t recognise from the original brooch!

We’re 8 today! 🙌🎈🥰
This was us on 21st April 2018 - the opening day at our beautiful shop, in West Malling (don’t we both look young 🙈)

During the last 8 years we’ve seen the arrival of one granddaughter, one niece and one nephew. We’ve lived through a pandemic, lost Paul’s dad, got married, and will soon be moving house! To say the last few years has been eventful is a bit of an understatement! But, through it all we have continued to help hundreds of our wonderful customers bring their jewellery ideas to life. Each and every commission has been an honour and one we never take for granted.

Thank you to all of you who have supported us over the last 8 years; from every commission, remodel or repair to every like, comment or share, we couldn’t have done it without you! Here’s to the future, we’re excited to see where it take us next 😘 x

What do you do with old, family jewellery? It’s super sentimental but it’s not your style. You’d never sell it but you won’t wear it as it is. Do you leave it in its box?

You could do, but you could take the diamonds out, melt the gold down and turn it into something that’s perfectly you! Now all those stories and memories and with you everyday 🥹

When we make an engagement ring, I have to put a lot of faith in the customer in front of me. I have to trust that they know what their partner would like (or at least dislike)! I can advise and give opinions but ultimately, I’m designing it blind.

That’s why it makes my heart sing, when I receive messages like this…

“She said “yes” and the ring is perfect!”

“Thank you so much for my beautiful ring!!!! It is absolutely PERFECT 🤩”

But, to be honest, who wouldn’t be happy with a sparkler like this one! Congratulations again you two, I hope you’re still enjoying your engagement bubble 🥳
