🔱A Chronometer Built for Exploration🔱

From the workshops of James Murray to the great expeditions of the 19th century, this exceptional marine chronometer carries a remarkable story of navigation, precision, and adventure.

Dating to circa 1830, this beautifully presented three-tier mahogany boxed two-day marine chronometer features an Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, split bimetallic compensated balance, and blued steel helical balance spring, hallmarks of the finest English chronometer making of the period.

Murray’s chronometers accompanied some of history’s most ambitious voyages. James Weddell carried three Murray chronometers aboard The Brig Jane during his Antarctic expedition of 1822–1824, reaching the furthest southern point recorded at that time. In 1823, Sir William Edward Parry also relied upon a Murray chronometer aboard HMS Hecla on his Arctic expedition.

Today, Murray’s work can be found in collections including the British Museum, Science Museum and The Royal Observatory Greenwich, and now at Carter Marsh & Co, Wi******er.
