You’re invited 🌼 Our Day of the Dead celebration returns to Palenque, York, on Saturday 31 October, 1–6pm.

With Susana’s roots in Chiapas, Mexico, this is a tradition close to our hearts, and one we love sharing with you.

Join us for hot drinks, sweet treats. Susana and David will be dressed for the occasion and happy to pose for a photo with you. Madame Coco will be opening her little shop too, with colourful calavera skulls to take home.

Visit our ofrenda, a traditional altar remembering loved ones, and learn a little about the meaning behind the celebration.

34 years ago today, we officially opened the doors of our first Palenque shop on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Although, technically, our first customer arrived the day before.

We were still setting up the window when a lady knocked on the door wanting to buy an orchid brooch we’d just put on display. We let her in, had a practice run with the till and made our first sale — which explains the receipt dated 7 October 1992 in these photographs.

We had very little money. We painted the shop ourselves, made many of the displays and repurposed whatever we could find. Our cash desk was made with old pizza trays found outside a restaurant on the Grassmarket, some furniture came from charity shops and David drew the original Palenque logo.

On our first official day we took just over £100. It felt like an enormous success. Every sale was written in a notebook because our till recorded the amount, but not what we’d sold. We still have that notebook — and one of David’s old university lever-arch files is still being used in the business today!

We’d met in Mexico the year before. After David finished university in Aberdeen, we moved to Edinburgh hoping to start a business. By chance we met a Chilean lady who wanted to sell her little shop on the Royal Mile. My parents funded our first stock and David’s dad guaranteed the small loan that allowed us to buy the lease.

Somehow, 34 years have passed incredibly quickly.

We’ve been lucky to have wonderful staff alongside us, Lisa and Louise for more than 20 years and Catherine for over 30! and we still work with some of the same jewellery-making families in Mexico. We’ve watched one generation grow older and now work with their children.

We’ve changed and adapted many times, but that slightly unlikely little business we started in 1992 is still here, and still very much Palenque.
