Held annually in Greece, the ATHENA IOOC highlights the significance of competing in the age-old homeland of the olive and the birthplace of noble competition which gave humanity the Olympic ideal. ATHENA INTERNATIONAL OLIVE OIL COMPETITION

Ο διαγωνισμός ΑΤΗΕΝΑ έχει όραμα να αναδείξει τη συμβολική σημασία της συμμετοχής και την αξία της νίκης εδώ στην Ελλάδα, τη χώρα που δεν είναι μόνο η γενέτειρα της ελιάς αλλά και η πατρίδα της ευγενούς άμιλλας και του ολυμπιακού ιδεώδους. Εδώ, στη σκιά της Ακρόπολης, όπου η θεά Αθηνά φύτεψε την πρώτη ελιά και που χρόνια αργότερα ο επιδρομέας Ξέρξης την έκαψε αλλά αυτή βλάστησε ξανά μέσα σε μια νύχτα, δίνοντας θάρρος στους Αθηναίους να νικήσουν τους Πέρσες. Εδώ, σε μια αιώνια πόλη που γεφυρώνει τις εποχές, συνενώνοντας τους μύθους και τους θρύλους του χθες με τις προκλήσεις του σήμερα. Σ’ ένα τόπο όπου αισθάνεται κανείς τη ροή του χρόνου και της ιστορίας να κυλά αδιατάρακτη πάνω στα ασημοπράσινα φύλλα των αιωνόβιων ελιών. Εδώ, όπου κανείς δεν αποκαλεί το λάδι ελαιόλαδο, γιατί για εμάς τους Έλληνες μόνο αυτό είναι το πραγματικό λάδι! The ATHENA International Olive Oil Competition aims to highlight the significance of competing and winning here in Greece, this age-old homeland of the olive and the birthplace of noble competition and the Olympic ideal. Right here, in the lee of the Acropolis, where the goddess Athena made an olive tree grow and where years later the invading Persians burned it but a new shoot quickly sprouted from the old stock – an omen that the city was destined to rise again more glorious from its ashes. In a place where one feels the unbroken flow of time and history over the silver-green leaves of century-old olive trees. A land where the term ‘olive oil’ is commonly shortened to ‘oil’ because for us Greeks only olive oil is the real thing!

The 11th edition of the ATHENA International Olive Oil Competition was held in Athens (Stratos Vassilikos Hotel), from May 2–4, 2026, with a record number of participants. In this year’s event, a total of 661 entries were recorded from 24 countries. The competition was held under the auspices of the Hellenic Republic Ministry of Rural Development and Food, the Hellenic Republic Ministry of Tourism, and the Region of Attica. The institutional partner was the Captain Vassilis & Carmen Konstantakopoulos Foundation. Product sponsors of this prestigious competition included the mineral water brands Δουμπιά Ανθρακούχο Φυσικό Μεταλλικό Νερό (sparkling) and Φυσικό Μεταλλικό Νερό Θεόνη-Theoni Natural Mineral Water (still), ΟΛΥΜΠΟΣ yogurts, Nespresso Professional - GR coffees, ZAGORIN apples, and 33 Brewing Company - Xrisafenia B**r.

The Athena IOOC 2026 returned to Athens (May 2–4, at Stratos Vassilikos Hotel) and marked a truly historic milestone!

A record 661 olive oil samples from 24 countries were carefully evaluated by an international panel of expert judges—once again confirming the global prestige and authority of this competition.

Selin Ertür is an olive oil taster, producer, and farmer in Edremit. Her expert status is officially recognized by Mipaff and Acap (the Association of Recognized Panel Leaders of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture). She holds both Italian and international panel leader licenses in accordance with IOOC standards and has panel leader authority recognized by IOOC.
