I was honoured to be invited to this workshop to learn about Urushi Lacquer, a 9000 year old japanese art form. As I’m always looking for ways to incorporate colour into Rhapsody in Gold, this felt like the ultimate inspiration at the perfect time.
Urushi lacquer is highly resistant to heat, acids, moisture and rot. The lacquer is made from the sap of the lacquer tree and is toxic to touch in its raw state. Urushi doesn’t dry and it cures by absorbing moisture from the air, which is why it’s so incredibly strong once finished.
From the jewellers bench to the ethereal Urushi craft, here’s a glimpse of my learnings at . ✨
