Jade Analysis & Services at GIA

Join the GIA Alumni Collective, for a virtual presentation Jade Analysis & Services at GIA with
Wim Vertriest, GIA Manager of Field Gemology.

During this talk, we’ll quickly review the nomenclature and definitions of Jade, including FeiCui. Traditionally, most FeiCui was mined in Myanmar but new production from Guatemala has impacted current supply. Both locations have a rich and unique tradition of using jade, which is coming together in the modern market. Separating these two sources presents a challenge for the trade, so we will also discuss the analytical aspects of jade analysis at GIA.

Speaker Bio:

Wim Vertriest is Manager of Field Gemology for GIA, Bangkok. Since joining GIA’s Field Gemology Department in 2015, Wim has visited gemstone mining areas in Africa, Asia, and Europe, where he was responsible for sample collection. He now oversees the Field Gemology Department and curates GIA’s colored stone research collection in Bangkok, Thailand.

Speaker Bio:

Wim Vertriest, GIA's Manager of Field Gemology, has participated in GIA field expeditions on multiple continents and focuses on colored gemstone mining areas for sample collection. Wim oversees the field gemology department and the colored stone research collection at the GIA Bangkok location. He graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in Belgium, obtained a masters in Geology in 2014 specializing in geodynamics and geofluids, and also gained his FGA and GG diplomas. Wim Vertriest has been working at GIA since 2015 and has (co-)authored articles on new gemstone localities, updates on existing mining localities, in-depth gemological studies, and treatment experiments.
