Tomorrow marks the official opening of the “Precious Coral, from Curiosity to Treasures” exhibition. On the eve of this special occasion, L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts warmly invites you to explore the rich history of precious coral.

In 1st-century China, during the Eastern Han dynasty, the dictionary 𝑆ℎ𝑢𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑛 𝐽𝑖𝑒𝑧𝑖 listed the word for coral under the jade radical and described it as living in the sea or the mountains. The idea that corals are animals did not emerge until the 18th century. Today, it is a well-established scientific fact that all coral species belong to the animal kingdom, specifically within the phylum Cnidaria.

Revered across civilizations, precious coral has long held a place of profound cultural significance — from ancient protective amulets to its celebrated presence in Renaissance art and Art Deco jewelry. While the term 'coral' encompasses thousands of marine species, only a rare few from the family Coralliidae family are used in jewelry and decorative arts.
