A Sunday Times investigation published July 19, 2026 found that multiple jewelry items sold on Amazon and TikTok Shop as sterling silver actually consisted almost entirely of cadmium, a recognized human carcinogen. A ring sold on Amazon as "Women's 925 Sterling Silver Simple Open Adjustable Rings" tested at 92.3% cadmium, over 9,000 times the UK legal limit of 0.01%. A TikTok Shop charm bracelet registered nearly 3,300 times the permitted level. Cadmium, which is silver-colored and cheap to produce, is used as a fraudulent fill by manufacturers. Professor Christer Hogstrand of King's College London stated plainly that cadmium is worse than mercury in terms of long-term toxicity, causing kidney cancer, lung cancer, liver damage, and osteoporosis with extended exposure.
The US has no comprehensive federal cadmium limit for adult jewelry, leaving tens of millions of consumers without meaningful legal protection. TikTok Shop removed the flagged seller and issued a recall. Amazon said it was removing the identified products. The UK's Office for Product Safety and Standards had already intercepted and destroyed Amazon jewelry at the border earlier in 2026 for identical violations, raising serious questions about why the products were still available for sale.
