A really good, vintage 9ct solid gold belcher chain, weighing 14.69g and measuring a generous 69cm / 27.17 inches. Birmingham-hallmarked and dated 1976, it bears the maker’s mark WJS, possibly W. J. Sutton Ltd, a well-established chain maker founded in the late 19th century. So there’s a little history behind those initials, too.

Wear it on its own, stack it, add a favourite pendant, or triple-wrap it around your wrist.

I had the chain appraised today, and the replacement value came back at €2,500. I wouldn’t be charging that for a pre-owned chain, of course, but it gives some context for the replacement cost of a comparable piece.

Just in today and available.

A really good, solid 9ct gold belcher chain. 69cm / 27.17” long and weighing 14.69g.

It’s hallmarked 9ct gold, with a Birmingham assay mark I think but I’ve misplaced my loupe, so I’ll confirm once I find it.

A substantial chain with a nice noticeable weight and heft to it, and long enough to wear on its own, with a pendant, or triple-wrapped around the wrist as a bracelet.

Monday - an Edwardian gilt paste flower brooch pinned to a Victorian pinchbeck fruit-drop pendant. Different pieces, different periods, but they work together.

I particularly like brooches because you can wear them in unexpected ways. A brooch can be a brooch, a pendant, a clasp… or, in this case, part of something else entirely.

A slightly revolting and thankfully incomplete little piece of family history… 🖤💜

This antique silver pin looks benign… but that’s because I’ve removed the bones 🦴 that were originally attached to it.

Originally my grandmother’s, it’s a late Victorian, early Edwardian Scottish grouse-foot pin, with a large faceted amethyst set in a beautifully chased silver mount.

The long bar behind it ends in a tiny hole, which is where the original grouse foot/claw was secured. The little bones were still attached when I got it, but they were, frankly, revolting 😬 so they have long since been buried. And as it’s not for sale currently, don’t @ me!

Grouse was Scotland’s traditional game bird, and grouse-foot pins were worn as good-luck charms, particularly for the hunt, and were also given as tokens of affection.

There was a difference in how these were worn: as a man’s kilt pin, the grouse foot would hang down beneath the stone; worn as a woman’s brooch, the orientation could be reversed, with the foot pointing upwards.

So I now have an interesting survivor of a very particular Scottish jewellery tradition, all the better for being incomplete. I’ll probably add a tiny flower or some heather to it instead, which might be a bit nicer than ghastly old bones. 💜
