A day in the office: a parcel of small fancy shapes poured onto the sheet, then we start sorting, checking, keeping only the stones that meet our standards. The ones that can be better, we recut ourselves, in our own workshop.

An emerald cut hides nothing.

A step cut is a window into the stone, where a brilliant's sparkle can mask a flaw, an emerald cut shows you everything. There's a lot we check, but here are three of the most important on this 6.56 ct D VVS2:

● Clarity: step cut shows the inside, so even a VVS2 this size gets checked carefully.
● Crown height: important for the the light to be send back evenly: no black windows, no dead spots.
● Color: a D has to be a true D

GIA doesn't grade the cut on a fancy shape. So we do.

This is a 5.03ct D VVS2 pear shape, Excellent polish, Excellent symmetry, no fluorescence. On a round brilliant, GIA would hand you a Cut grade. On a pear, it stops at polish and symmetry, everything that decides whether the stone
actually performs is left to the eye reading it.

Heart shape is one of the hardest shapes to cut well. The cleft, the position of the culet, the curves, the table size, the depth of the stone,... they all need to be right. At seven carats every one of those decisions is magnified and most cutters will give something up to hold the weight.
