If we could choose a culture to be born into,
we would choose this one for every life.

The culture that gives us nine nights with Maa.
The culture that makes dressing up a part of devotion, where the chaniya choli comes out, the jewellery goes on, and the whole city comes alive in celebration.

And if we had the choice,
we would choose this one for every life.

For generations, men across India wore jewellery as naturally as they wore their finest clothes. A pearl at the ear, a kanthi at the neck, a sarpech on the turban, a ring carrying a prayer and his family story.

Across regions, communities and centuries, adornment was woven into the way men dressed. As they celebrated, prayed and presented themselves.

Unfortunately with colonisation we reached a day and age where we began calling it feminine, excessive, even cringe.

The ornament was never the problem. We believe others who made us forget how to see ornaments in our culture.

Men of India, embrace our culture and start adorning your Jewels. Our tribal collection is the easiest to start with ❤️

03 Rabari Men - The Tribal Project

When we think of Rabari jewellery, most of us immediately picture the incredible jewellery worn by Rabari women.

But here’s something you may not know: Rabari men have a long tradition of wearing jewellery too.

Silver earrings, neck ornaments and other pieces have been worn by Rabari men for generations - as part of their identity and their connection to the community.

And that’s what makes it so interesting.

Today, men wearing jewellery can sometimes feel like a fashion statement. Something new. Something a little experimental. But across Indian communities, men wearing jewellery is anything but new.

The Rabaris are one beautiful example of that.

So this Navratri, if you’re a man going for Garba and wondering whether jewellery is “too much” - perhaps the Rabaris have already answered that question.
Put on the earrings. Wear the oxidised. Add a little drama.

Because jewellery belongs to every gender as a beautiful part of our culture.

03 Rabari Men - The Tribal Project

Rabari men have been wearing jewellery for generations - especially earrings, neck ornaments and other pieces that were part of their everyday identity and community.

The jewellery is bold. It’s beautiful. And there’s absolutely nothing “too much” about a man wearing it.
So if you’re a man heading to Garba this Navratri and wondering what to wear…

Maybe don’t look at fashion.
Look at the Rabaris.

Because jewellery belongs to every gender as a beautiful part of our culture.

A study of femininity through the jewellery that has accompanied it across centuries.

We went back to ancient Indian sculpture to look at the way women, adornment and the body were represented in stone. Jewellery has remained so closely tied to the visual identity of femininity, changing in form and craft, while continuing to hold its place on the body.

This project is our way of looking back at that history, and bringing a little of it into the present through Mortantra’s Tribal collection.
