Indian painting has a very long tradition and history in Indian art. The earliest Indian paintings were the rock paintings of pre-historic times, the petroglyphs as found in places like Bhimbetka, some of them from before 5500 BC. India's Buddhist literature is replete with examples of texts which describe palaces of the army and the aristocratic class embellished with paintings, but the paintings of the Ajanta Caves are the most significant of the few survivals. Smaller scale painting in manuscripts was probably also practised in this period, though the earliest survivals are from the medieval period. Mughal painting represented a fusion of the Persian miniature with older Indian traditions, and from the 17th century its style was diffused across Indian princely courts of all religions, each developing a local style.

Genres of Indian painting

Indian paintings can be broadly classified as murals and miniatures. Murals are large works executed on the walls of solid structures, as in the Ajanta Caves and the Kailashnath temple. Miniature paintings are executed on a very small scale for books or albums on perishable material such as paper and cloth.

Eastern India painting

In eastern India miniature painting developed in 10th century. These miniatures, depicting Buddhist divinities and scenes from the life of Buddha were painted on the leaves (about 2.25 by 3 inches) of the palm-leaf manuscripts as well as their wooden covers. Most common Buddhist illustrated manuscripts include the texts Astasahasrika Prajnaparamita,[5] Pancharaksa, Karandavyuha and Kalachakra Ta**ra. The earliest extant miniatures are found in a manuscript of the Astasahasrika Prajnaparamita dated in the sixth regnal year of Mahipala (c. 993), presentlythe possession of The Asiatic Society, Kolkata.

Mughal painting

Mughal painting is a particular style of Indian painting, generally confined to illustrations on the book and done in miniatures, and which emerged, developed and took shape during the period of the Mughal Empire 16th −19th centuries.

Mysore painting

Mysore painting is an important form of classical South Indian painting that originated in the town of Mysore in Karnataka. These paintings are known for their elegance, muted colours, and attention to detail. The themes for most of these paintings are Hindu Gods and Goddesses and scenes from Hindu mythology. In modern times, these paintings have become a much sought after souvenir during festive occasions in South India.

Blue Pottery of Jaipur, Rajhastan is widely recognized as a traditional craft of Jaipur, though it is Turko-Persian in origin. The name 'blue pottery' comes from the eye-catching blue dye used to color the pottery.
Jaipur blue pottery, made out of Egyptian paste, is glazed and low-fired. No clay is used: the 'dough' for the pottery is prepared by mixing quartz stone powder, powdered glass, Multani Mitti (Fuller's Earth), borax, gum and water. Another source cites Katira Gond powder (a gum), and saaji (soda bicarbonate) as ingredients.
Some of this pottery is semi-transparent and mostly decorated with animal and bird motifs. Being fired at very low temperature makes them fragile. The range of items is primarily decorative, such as ashtrays, vases, coasters, small bowls and boxes for trinkets. The color palette is restricted to blue derived from the cobalt oxide, green from the copper oxide and white, though other non-conventional colors, such as yellow and brown are sometimes included.

Lac Bangles
The time and place of origin of lac is not known, as very old excavations show lac coated materials, some of them may be dated as old as 1600 BC. It is a resin extracted from wild trees. The resin is accumulated by insects. The term lac is said to have originated from the English version of the number of insects(1 lac or 100 thousand) required to produce a pound of lac. Lac is found in most of the asian countries. Though lac has many uses, but in handicraft industry it is predominantly used in crafting of jewelery. Various jewelery items made include necklaces, bangles, earrings and jewelery boxes. Other articles of lac include pen, penstand, coasters, ashtrays, napkin holders, mirrors, key chain, photo frame etc.
Lac Jewellery of Rajasthan
Lac is collected from forest and very commonly used for costume jewellery. In northern Bihar about one hundred tons of rejected lac which remains in the pack after squeezing, is used for bangle cores and the better quality lac is used for decoration. Lampshades, toddlers push carts, serving bowls, nose rings decorated with bright red colour are few beautiful examples of craftsmanship.
The lac bangles have an inner-core which is covered by a relatively thin layer of better quality coloured lac. Core lac is strengthened by a material like white clay. The dry ingredients are heated, mixed together, kneaded and pounded with a hammer, a process repeated until the mass has formed similar type of dough like consistency. After further heating and shaping, the lac is expanded and the diameter is bargained to bangle thickness and finished by rolling across a flat surface with a flat shaping tool. Shapes are done by pressing the lac length into coloured grooves on each side of a wooden forming block or mould. The lac is forced into the groove with the instrument to take on the shape of the groove.
Glass beads, decorative wire, small bits of geometrically shaped or flower shaped mirrors are used as embellishments";" they are also decorated with gold foil, wire and glass seed beads.Lac jewellery set with glass chatons is a popular item in Rajasthan and Jaipur city is the big centre for it. Bangles are considered very auspicious in the Hindu religion and Lac bangles are worn on all auspicious occasions in Rajasthan. Lac bangles are made in many shades and are plain or studded with glass pieces, semi precious and precious stones are also ornamented. The plain bangles have wavy or zigzag designs.

Palm leaf pattachitra which is in Oriya language known as Tala Pattachitra drawn on palm leaf. First of all palm leaves are left for becoming hard after being taken from tree. Then these are sewn together to form like a canvas. The images are traced by using black or white ink to fill grooves etched on rows of equal-sized panels of palm leaf that are sewn together. These panels can also be easily folded like a fan and packed in a compact pile for better conservation.Often palm-leaf illustrations are more elaborated, obtaining by superimposing layers that are glued together for most of the surface, but in some areas can open like small windows to reveal a second image under the first layer.
