VVS vs VS WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN?
Ever looked at a diamond listing and wondered:
VVS1? VVS2? VS1? What do all these letters actually mean?
Here’s a simple guide you can SAVE before buying your next diamond.
FIRST WHAT IS CLARITY?
Clarity tells you about the tiny internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface characteristics present in a diamond.
Diamonds are graded under 10× magnification.
VVS = VERY, VERY SLIGHTLY INCLUDED
VVS1 and VVS2 diamonds have inclusions that are extremely difficult for a trained grader to identify under 10× magnification.
Think of VVS as very high clarity with exceptionally difficult-to-see inclusions.
VS = VERY SLIGHTLY INCLUDED
VS1 and VS2 diamonds have inclusions that are easier for a trained grader to identify under 10× magnification.
But here's the important part:
Many VS diamonds can still look completely clean to the naked eye.
SO… SHOULD YOU ALWAYS BUY VVS?
Not necessarily.
VVS can be worth considering if you value:
Higher clarity rarity
Premium specifications
Extremely clean characteristics under magnification
VS can be excellent value if you want:
A beautiful, eye-clean diamond
More budget flexibility
To put more of your budget towards cut, size or colour
THE BIGGEST THING TO REMEMBER
Higher clarity doesn't automatically mean more sparkle.
A diamond's brilliance is strongly influenced by its cut, proportions, polish and symmetry.
So don't choose a diamond simply because the listing says VVS.
Instead, compare:
CUT + COLOUR + CLARITY + CARAT + CERTIFICATION + PRICE
The smartest buyer doesn't simply buy the highest grade.
They understand what they're paying for.
