A heatwave is a prolonged period of abnormally hot weather, typically defined when maximum temperatures surpass normal thresholds by 4.5^\circ\text{C} or more for consecutive days. Primarily driven by atmospheric high-pressure systems that trap heat over a region, heatwaves are intensifying globally due to climate change.

Their impacts are severe and multi-dimensional:

Public Health: Heatwaves trigger heat exhaustion, fatal heat strokes, and exacerbate cardiovascular conditions. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly and outdoor laborers, face the highest risks.

Agriculture & Food Security: Extreme heat accelerates soil moisture depletion, causes widespread crop failures, and leads to livestock distress, threatening food supply chains.

Infrastructure & Economy: Surging demand for cooling strains power grids, leading to frequent blackouts. High temperatures can warp railway tracks, melt asphalt, and severely reduce labor productivity.

Ecosystems: Extended heatwaves dry out vegetation, acting as a catalyst for catastrophic wildfires and leading to severe habitat loss.

As global temperatures continue to rise, heatwaves are becoming more frequent, severe, and long-lasting, making proactive urban planning and robust climate adaptation strategies essential.

Nautapa (नौतपा), a traditional meteorological and astrological concept in India that refers to the 9 hottest days of the summer season.

Here is a detailed breakdown of what Nautapa is, why it happens, and its cultural and scientific significance:
1. What is Nautapa?

The word is derived from two Hindi words: ‘Nau’ (nine) and ‘Tapa’ (heating/burning). It marks a specific 9-day period during the Hindu month of Jyeshtha when the sun’s rays are exceptionally intense, causing temperatures to soar across northern and central India.

2. The Astrological Reason

According to Vedic astrology, Nautapa begins when the Sun enters the Rohini Nakshatra (the fourth star mansion).
The Sun stays in this Nakshatra for about 14 days, but the first 9 days are considered the peak.
Moon is the lord of Rohini Nakshatra and represents coolness. When the intense heat of the Sun influences this Nakshatra, it completely neutralizes the cooling effect, leading to a massive spike in temperatures on Earth.
