একটা চিঠির পাতার মতো দেখাক, এটাই চেয়েছিলাম। ঘড়ির আকারেই যেন লুকিয়ে থাকে গল্পটা।

There was a reason the dial is rectangular, not round.

I wanted it to look like a page from a letter. The shape itself was meant to carry part of the story.

ডায়াল শুকানোর ব্যাপারে একটা সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিলাম শুরুতেই।

কোনো ডায়াল যন্ত্রে শুকানো হয়নি। সামান্য কালি ছড়ালেই ভেতরের হাতের লেখাটা অস্পষ্ট হয়ে যেত। তাই প্রতিটা ডায়াল শুকিয়েছে স্বাভাবিকভাবে, নিজের সময়ে।

সময় বেশি লেগেছে। ফলটা তার যোগ্য মনে হয়েছে।

None of these dials went through a machine dryer.

One stray drop of ink, and the handwriting inside would have blurred beyond saving. So each one dried slowly, in its own time, the way ink used to before machines came along.

It took longer. I think it was worth it.

হিন্দ ডিজাইন করতে গিয়ে প্রথম কাজ ছিল, নেতাজির চিঠিপত্র ঘাঁটা।

মাসের পর মাস গেছে শুধু হাতের লেখাটা বোঝার চেষ্টায়। কোন অক্ষর কীভাবে বাঁকে, কোথায় চাপ পড়ে কলমে, তার প্রতিটা খুঁটিনাটি।

The first task with Hind was going through Netaji's own letters.

Months went into just understanding the handwriting — how each letter curved, where the pen pressed harder. Nothing about it was guessed.

রবি-লিপির ডায়াল নিয়ে একটা কথা বলা দরকার।

সাধারণত একটা ডায়াল ছাপা হয় এক ধাপে। এটা লেগেছে পাঁচ ধাপ। ভেতরের সবচেয়ে সূক্ষ্ম রেখাটাও যেন স্পষ্ট থাকে, তার জন্যই এই বাড়তি চারটে ধাপ।

একটা অক্ষরের প্রস্থ মেপে দেখেছি, দুই মিলিমিটারেরও কম।

A watch dial usually takes one pass to print. Ours took five.

There's a kind of stubbornness in wanting a single letter, barely two millimetres wide, to stay legible under a glass. We had that stubbornness. So, I like to think, did the man who first wrote it, over a hundred years ago.
