Made for explorers, made famous by Steve McQueen.
The rolex Explorer II Ref. 1655, affectionately known among collectors as the “Freccione”, was introduced in the early 1970s for explorers, speleologists and professionals operating in environments where distinguishing day from night was essential.
Its defining feature is the large orange 24-hour hand (the famous Freccione) allowing the wearer to read a second 24-hour scale at a glance.
Produced for approximately 15 years, the reference evolved through several dial and bezel variations. This particular example, manufactured in 1980, features the highly desirable MK IV dial paired with an MK III bezel.
Powered by the robust calibre 1570, it remains one of the purest expressions of Rolex’s professional watchmaking era.
Completing the package is its Oyster bracelet ref. 78360 with 580 end links and VE-stamped clasp.
Offered as a full set from 1981, accompanied by a Rolex service from 2019 and an expertise by .
