• A Reminder: Rushing Is Never Worth It •
Time for a little honest and open sharing.
During a lesson, I got cocky. In an attempt to speed up a process, I convinced myself that scalpel safety rules didn't apply to me. The scalpel slipped, came towards me and sliced my wrist open.
I was incredibly lucky. I avoided arteries, ligaments and tendons, and the injury was limited to the soft tissue. It could have been so much worse.
This isn't a sympathy post, nor is it intended to scare anyone. It's simply a reminder (to myself as much as anyone else) that rushing is never worth it.
As jewellers, rushing doesn't just compromise the quality of our work; it can compromise our safety, too. Skipping steps, cutting corners or becoming less cautious to save a few seconds can have consequences far beyond a less-than-perfect finish.
We work with sharp tools, hot equipment and potentially dangerous machinery every day. When something becomes familiar, it's easy to become complacent and forget that even the simplest task deserves our full attention.
Experience doesn't make us invincible, and confidence should never replace caution.
The rules are there for a reason. The correct techniques are there for a reason. And no job is so urgent that it's worth risking your safety over.
So take your time, follow the proper procedures and give your work, and yourself, the care and attention you deserve.
Sometimes, the most important thing we can learn at the bench is when to slow down. ❤️
