Vetta Spillmann Gilt Chronograph

Vetta gilt chronograph

There is a particular category of vintage chronograph that becomes increasingly interesting the deeper you go into the period: watches where the name on the dial is only one part of the story, and the movement, case construction and historical context carry equal weight.

This Vetta from 1939 is a strong example. Vetta was one of the important Italian names associated with sophisticated Swiss-made watches, and its early chronographs are particularly relevant to the history of Italian watch collecting. Here, the combination of a gilt dial, 36 mm case and Forte Pressione construction gives the watch an unmistakably early character.

Inside is the Valjoux 23, one of the great manual-winding column-wheel chronographs of the 1930s and 1940s. A calibre with genuine horological importance, and one that places this Vetta firmly within the serious pre-war chronograph tradition.

Vetta Spillmann Gilt Chronograph

The 1940s produced some of the most compelling mechanical chronographs, combining serious timing capabilities with an elegance that remains difficult to replicate. This Vetta is powered by the Valjoux 71, a manual-winding three-register caliber, housed in a 37.5 mm stainless steel case manufactured by Spillmann. Its inverted pump pushers give the case a distinctive profile, characteristic of the experimental spirit of early chronograph design.

The gilt dial is the real highlight. Arabic numerals and gold-toned graphics contrast with the glossy black surface, recalling traditional dial-making techniques in which metallic details were preserved through a negative-resist process before the surrounding areas were darkened. Rather than simply applying gold-colored printing, this approach allowed the underlying metal to contribute to the final appearance. Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner ref. 14060 marked a defining transition in the history of the no-date Submariner. Introduced in 1990, it replaced the long-running ref. 5513 with the calibre 3000, while preserving the essential design that made the Submariner an icon: a perfectly balanced dial, a clean bezel layout and the unmistakable proportions of a professional Rolex sports watch.

Omega Classic Rose Gold

Zentih Gold Stellina Oversize Chronograph

Before the El Primero, there was already a remarkable chronograph tradition at Zenith. During the early 1960s, the Le Locle manufacture was producing sophisticated manually wound chronographs that combined traditional mechanical architecture with the elegance of solid-gold cases.

We call this example "The Golden Stellina", a reference to the applied star that defines its dial. Crafted in solid rose gold, its substantial 38 mm case offers exceptional wrist presence for the period, with sharply defined lugs, rounded pump pushers and a screw-down case back. The silvered white sunburst dial, three recessed registers and Base 1000 tachymeter scale capture the understated confidence of mid-century Swiss design.

Inside beats the hand-wound Zenith calibre 146H, a column-wheel chronograph movement from the manufacture’s important pre-El Primero era. Paired with the warm tone and reassuring weight of the gold case, it makes for a particularly attractive proposition for collectors seeking mechanical substance and vintage elegance in equal measure. Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute

There are vintage Breitlings that are historically important, and then there are those that have an unmistakable personality. This 1967 Cosmonaute Ref. 809 belongs firmly to the second category. The 24-hour dial, born from the Navitimer architecture, gives the Cosmonaute its unique identity and connects it directly to the world of professional aviation and the extraordinary story of early space exploration.

What makes this example particularly special is the ageing of its original tritium plots. The markers have developed an exceptional, naturally evolved patina, with the warmth and irregularity that collectors look for in genuinely untouched vintage material. It is not simply an old dial: it is a dial that visibly carries its age. Finished with a Louisiana alligator strap and original Breitling buckle.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona "Zenith El Primero"

The Zenith Daytona is one of those Rolex references where the details tell the story. The Ref. 16520 was Rolex’s first automatic Daytona, introduced with the heavily modified Zenith El Primero-based Cal. 4030. But the real fascination begins when you start studying the different dial generations produced during its life.

This 1991 E-series example belongs to the early inverted 6 generation, with the numeral at six o’clock appearing upside down — one of the small production quirks that has become a defining collector detail. Add the white dial, fully satin-finished Oyster bracelet, early 16520 case architecture and its complete original documentation, including evidence of its original Gran Canaria sale in 1992, and this becomes much more than simply a Zenith Daytona: it is a very specific moment in the evolution of the Cosmograph.

For collectors, this is precisely why the early 16520 remains so compelling. Before the reference settled into the later, more familiar configuration, Rolex was constantly refining the Daytona — and today those transitional details are what make the best examples so rewarding to own.

Heuer Autavia "Jo Siffert"

Few names in vintage chronographs are as inseparable from motorsport as Heuer. Jack Heuer understood early that racing was the perfect stage for a mechanical chronograph, combining timing, speed and legibility. Through the 1960s and ’70s, Heuer became deeply embedded in the racing world, with its watches and timing equipment present at the circuits and on the wrists of drivers.

The Autavia, originally a dashboard instrument combining AUTomobile and AVIAtion, became one of Heuer’s defining wrist chronographs from 1966. This Ref. 1163T captures that racing spirit with its striking white panda dial, black registers and blue central chronograph seconds hand.

This is a particularly desirable early configuration, distinguished by the rarer 3-6-9 seconds sub-register and first-type hands. It is fitted with the highly sought-after Gay Frères bracelet with HLD end links, an exceptionally compelling period combination. The “Jo Siffert” nickname reflects the Swiss Formula One driver’s close association with Heuer and the racing world, making the 1163T one of the most evocative chronographs of Heuer’s golden motorsport era.
