The Bespoke Life | Ties & Dreams by Giorgio Napoli

“Nothing is more charming than the unnecessary”, that’s what I thought when I stumbled in this bespoke ties shop, during a weekend in my city, Naples. No, it’s not a spelling mistake: Ties & Dreams is the right place for “bespoke” lovers, even when it comes to ties. Giorgio Ricciardi buys fabrics in Como and London, is a menswear lover, who followed his father’s footsteps, and reinvented himself is a succesful way. In the early 30’s of the past century, his father had opened a high quality fabric shop in the heart of a rich neapolitan neighbourhood. In the 80’s he had boutiques in Via Calabritto (Napoli) and in the evocative Via Camerelle in Capri, the last one even mentioned in an enthusiastic article on Vogue.
Today he defines himself “a teenager in the body of a sixty-year-old man” and I believe him, given the passion he delivers for his job. “A passione e nu guajo”, he reminds me, in Neapolitan dialect, while I touch the pure silks in the showroom and suddenly comes to my mind a line from the Argentinian movie “The secret in their eyes”, in which Morales (Pablo Rago), tallking with Benjamín (Ricardo Darín), says: “You can change everything, the face, the house, the family, the lover, the religion, even God…but there’s one thing you can never change Benjamín…you can never change the passion”. And the passion of this neapolitan gentleman reflects in every corner of this caprese style shop, in the furniture, in the words he uses and the pictures he shows me while recalling his trips to Milan and Rome to show his collections. Giorgio provides customers with a bespoke ties service, hand-sewn, three or seven folds, with fabrics, length and pattern specific to one’s preferences, costomized logo on the front, monograms on the back, home delivery and even a cotton thread at the end of the seam (the clutch) to adjust a crumpled tie after having knotted it (!). Everything at a more than reasonable price. I wave goodbye to him, happy to have discovered this unexpected “bespoke corner” in Naples and I only regret not having spotted it before
