I began working on this project in 2016. At the beginning, I jotted down some half-length sketches portraying men and women, as if they were real portraits. As I kept on drawing, I realized that these portraits became intricately complex characters who had their own colors, clothes and personality. In fact, they reminded me of the flapper girls from the roaring 20’s and the “gagà” men who showed off their gentleman-like outfits during both World Wars in Italy. My grandmother used to say that “when a man dressed well he looked like a Gagà”! The will to make these illustrations 3D was extremely strong, therefore I decided to give them a 3rd dimension and make them into striped dolls. I thought they were a great idea, but the more I played around with these beautiful wooden hand-cut and painted figures, the more I thought they were missing something. Suddenly it was EUREKA! A light bulb lit up in my head... literally! I had to mix the aesthetics of these wooden figures with functionality and why not make them light up! This is how the striped doll lamps were born. Usually when I meet people, I am always attracted to the aura around them, to me it’s as though each and everyone of us has their own particular light. I suddenly thought to myself: why not translate this feeling into something concrete? I don’t want to sound nuts, but this is exactly how the “Light me up” project came to existence. I began to translate this feeling into physical representation and in fact I now love to realize lamps that portray real people in all of their beauty, emanating their inner light... and why not bringing real light into their daily life.
