I went back to Catherine Hall, West Green and West Green Meadows yesterday.

There’s been some progress, heavy machines clearing debris, a few trucks moving through, but once you turn off the main road, the real story begins. The mud is still thick. The contents of people’s homes: furniture, clothes, everything, are still piled up on the roadside with mud, waiting to be taken away.

A few friends came with me, and we handed out about 25 care packages. But it again, a drop in the bucket. The need is still overwhelming.

I brought the water truck again and was able to finish cleaning my mom’s house. Most families don’t have the kind of help I can give my mom. There are unconfirmed reports that some areas may have had water restored late yesterday.

It’s been more than two weeks since Hurricane Melissa. Progress has been slow, but Jamaicans are resilient, we rise stronger every time.

Update:
I went back to West Green, West Green Meadows and Catherine Hall yesterday.

The Parish Council has started some cleanup, mostly along the main road. Noticed a dumper truck, but once you turn into the lanes, it’s still devastation.

Every single thing inside people’s homes, furniture, clothes, bedding, pots, documents, memories, is now muddy garbage piled on the roadside. The the sight, the weight of loss…it’s indescribable.

I handed out 50 plus care packages again in West Green Meadows, water, food, Dettol, Pampers, soap, but it felt like a drop in the bucket. The lines were long, people standing in mud in their water boots, still waiting after everything was gone.

What’s needed most right now is water: drinking water, and water to hose their homes. Trucks are needed to remove the debris that’s now rotting in the streets. Tow trucks are needed to move cars out of the way.

I managed to get a small truck with two large black tanks of water to my mom’s house to start cleaning. Friends helped. But my mother is in a privileged position; she has me. Many others don’t know where to start.

These are working class communities. They need us.
