Circular Studies | Jewellery Design Development
Exploring line, movement and negative space through a series of contemporary jewellery designs inspired by hummingbirds and botanical forms. Our sketchbook studies investigate how hand-forged silver stems might frame a delicate gold hummingbird, with Japanese red urushi lacquer introducing colour, depth and contrast. Each variation explores a different relationship between the bird, the flower and the surrounding structure.
Some compositions remain circular, while others develop into elongated, asymmetrical forms. Small changes in proportion, suspension and balance can completely transform the character of a sculptural pendant.
Sometimes jewellery design begins long before the metal reaches the workbench: it's a process of observation, experimentation and questioning, where even the smallest detail can change the direction of a piece. A few possibilities are taking shape.
The hummingbird, meanwhile, seems entirely unconcerned with structural engineering… 🤭
