In connection with the construction of the New Imperial Palace, Mr. Hajime Kato—a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) for colored porcelain—was commissioned to create a large vase measuring over 150 cm to be installed in the palace.
For this project, Mr. Kato requested the cooperation of Iwao Porcelain (Taizan
Kiln) in Arita.
Shaping such a large vase required exceptional wheel-throwing skills. Consequently, through Iwao Porcelain, a request for the shaping work was sent to Mr. Chūemon Okugawa, who was hailed at the time as the “ The Master of the Potter’s Wheel.”
However, Mr. Okugawa was in poor health and unable to participate in the production himself.
At that time, Mr. Okugawa said,
“I’ll leave that to Mr. Inoue,”
and recommended his top disciple, Manji Inoue.
Thus, Manji took on the major responsibility of shaping the large vase to be delivered to the New Imperial Palace, though the production process proved extremely difficult.
This project marked the beginning of the connection between Manji and Mr. Kato.
Then, several years later in 1968, when Manji made his debut at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and was selected for the first time, Mr.Kato was one of the judges.
Skills and trust were passed down from person to person.
It is this accumulation that has led to the Inoue Manji Kiln of today.
