I was so happy to discover I wasn’t the only one imagining what a Ryukyu princess might wear today.
Last Friday, I went to The Queen’s Wardrobe at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum in Naha. The idea behind the show was to imagine how a Ryukyu queen would dress if she lived today.
I’ve been living in Okinawa for eight years now. I’m not Okinawan, and there’s still so much I want to learn about this place.
As much as I love pearls and diamonds, there’s something I love even more — discovering the history, traditions, and craftsmanship of this incredible island.
That’s also where my Minsa earrings came from. Inspired by traditional Yaeyama minsā weaving and its beautiful message of lasting love, I imagined how a Ryukyu princess might wear that story today.
I love the idea that traditions don’t have to stay in the past. They can inspire something new.
And if I can contribute even a little to the island I now call home through something I create, that would mean a lot to me.
So thank you for the inspiration. I think it’s time I shared a little more of my own work.
