Joy Harvey's "Ruined Splendour - Bronze Diadem" emerges at the intersection of ancient jewellery pieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the intricate art of guillochage from Vacheron Constantin.

Crafted from custom alloys, this bronze coronet is hammered, chiselled, and laminated, its delicate granulation and purposeful imperfections weaving a narrative of time's passage. By creating objects that may appear unfinished or even damaged, Harvey affirms her belief that imperfections are sites for deeper meanings, especially in a practice (and world) obsessed with artificial perfection.

Today, on 17 September 2026 at 10.00 am Geneva time, Vacheron Constantin marks 271 years of an uninterrupted narrative that continues to be written day by day. This enduring legacy is highlighted in 'La Quête du Temps' astronomical clock, an unprecedented work of mechanical artistry with a dome showcasing constellations as they were in the sky above Geneva on the day that the Maison was founded: 17 September 1755. At 10.00 am that day, Jean-Marc Vacheron signed the contract to employ his first apprentice.

The Illusion of Ice, Sculpted from Cotton

From the circular frame of the dial, an all-white crocodile appears to prowl through seemingly snow-covered vegetation. This "Papercroc" timepiece, a remarkable creation by Marianne Guély, is not sculpted from ice, but fashioned entirely from white cotton paper. It stands as a testament to microscopic paper sculpting, a technique explored within Vacheron Constantin's "One of Not Many Crafts Programme".

This intricate composition, measuring only 3 millimetres in height, is the result of months of experimentation. It combines embossing, laser cutting, and hand assembly on sheets of 250 and 300-gram cotton paper. Bespoke brass matrices, heated to 60–70°C / 140–158°F, were pressed onto the paper under intense pressure to create subtle reliefs and delicate gradations of depth, allowing light to define every contour.

The challenge lay in achieving such precision and detail at a microscopic scale, ensuring the crocodile appeared alive and sculptural without exceeding the dial's technical constraints. The collaboration with specialists in ultra-precise laser cutting was instrumental in achieving the refinement required by Haute Horlogerie. This timepiece reveals how paper, often associated with fragility, can enter the world of haute horlogerie as a true form of art, expanding the creative vocabulary of the Maison.

Unfolding Wonders: Miniature Marine World In Micro-Origami

Suspended within the dial, a group of miniature manta rays swirls across a deep-blue nocturnal background, a breathtaking display of micro-origami by Anya Midori.

Each manta ray, varying from just 5 to 10 millimetres, is meticulously folded from hand-colored Japanese paper. The paper itself, weighing only 20 grams – a quarter the thickness of standard copier paper – presented a unique challenge, requiring precise dyeing, specially developed for the project to achieve the perfect shade of blue. This intricate art required the development of an entirely new, bespoke origami sequence, born from extensive research into the proportions and movements of real rays.

The folding was achieved exclusively using fingers, fingernails, and a toothpick, without magnification, transforming paper measuring 9 to 12 millimeters into these delicate creatures. This demanding process, from initial conversations to final completion, spanned over two years, with early pieces taking up to six hours to fold.

This "Oraygami" timepiece exemplifies the Maison's enduring commitment to fostering artistic excellence and pushing the boundaries of savoir-faire, transforming unexpected crafts into miniature works of art that invite contemplation.

The Art of Three-Dimensional Marquetry

A fierce falcon dominates the dial of the "Woodenwings" timepiece, an experimental exercise in three-dimensional marquetry, where wood is transformed into a vibrant, dynamic work of art.

Crafted by Anna Le C***o, this falcon comes to life through twelve different wood species, each chosen for its distinct grain, texture, and color, including smoked eucalyptus and dark blue-dyed birch. Three distinct marquetry techniques were employed: circular marquetry for the background, sculpted layered marquetry for the falcon's body, and a unique "feather-by-feather" assembly technique for the wing, revealing realistic plumage and layered textures.

Achieving such realism and volume within a mere 3 millimetres of height presented significant challenges. Traditional woodworking tools proved unusable, necessitating the adoption of precision micro-tools, including surgical scalpels and microscopic carbide bits. Much of the work was carried out under binocular magnification, pushing the boundaries of what is possible with wood at this scale.

This timepiece is an ode to the visual and tactile richness of wood. It exemplifies the dialogue between the artist and the Maison, enriching savoir-faire and opening new possibilities for artistic expression.

A Delicate Dance of Micro-Plumasserie

Within a fantastical landscape, an imaginary serpent coils across the dial of the "Feathersnake" timepiece, while highlighting the rare art of micro-plumasserie. Crafted by Julien Vermeulen, this creation rises a mere three millimetres above the surface, yet achieves a remarkable sense of volume and plasticity.

The serpent itself is a mosaic of over 200 tiny pieces, meticulously derived from seven rare Lophophore feathers. To achieve such intricate detail, the artist removed the feather's central quill and mounted the delicate plumes onto silk paper for exceptionally precise cuts. This demanding process, requiring precision akin to surgery, involved the creation of custom micro-tools, including a scalpel fashioned from a reshaped needle, and consumed approximately 250 hours of dedicated work.

This Métiers d'Art creation, where the snake's eye in 18-karat gold and enamel anchors the kinetic composition, exemplifies the Maison's enduring commitment to pushing the boundaries of savoir-faire and artistic expression within Haute Horlogerie, transforming unexpected crafts into miniature works of art.
