Found myself sketching the old-school way again recently and it made me laugh thinking about how this used to be my entire design process.

When I first started designing for Cher & Grace, most of our wood pieces began on graph paper with a drawing compass, protractor, and a lot of measuring to work out proportions.

It was how I figured out the structure and scale of so many of our earlier wood designs — long before I discovered how much easier life would become with an iPad and Procreate.

Looking back, it feels slightly wild that this is how I did it.
But it taught me so much about designing.

I still love occasionally going back to pen and paper though.
There’s something about physically sketching an idea that feels grounding and creative.

Sometimes it’s nice to look back and see how much the process has changed, while realising the heart of it hasn’t changed at all. ✨

There are so many good local brands doing thoughtful, creative work in Colombo right now 🤍

As a small business ourselves, we know how much care goes into building something from the ground up - so here are a few local brands I’ve genuinely been loving lately.

🩶Maia - I’ve been shopping at Maia for years now. Lovely fabrics, easy-to-wear silhouettes, and pieces that somehow always end up becoming wardrobe staples. Also love that they’re accessibly priced without compromising on design. .lk

🩶Maus - Still wearing a pair of gladiator sandals I bought years ago from Maus. So comfortable for all-day wear, and they add just the right amount of edge to a simple outfit.

🩶Leila - Recently picked up a few new pieces, including this woven tote. Perfect as an oversized work bag, beach bag, or carry-all to throw everything in. Really love the finish and attention to detail in their pieces.

🩶Mineral Earth Soaps - One of those brands I keep coming back to. We use their soaps at home for our whole family. Natural ingredients, clean packaging, and subtle scents that are calming rather than overpowering.

The Jayah Earrings ✨

There’s something about this design that stops people mid-scroll — and we understand why.

A handmade earring that moves through three distinct forms. The structured triangle up top. The open, rhythmic spine through the middle. The warmth of wood at the end, grounded by a touch of green.

A balance of structure and movement, bringing together layered forms, natural wood, and subtle colour in a way that feels both sculptural and wearable.

This is what we love about working with wood — it softens bold design, making even statement pieces feel considered and easy to wear. Natural, but striking. Distinctive, without feeling overdone.
